Puriri class has joined the Zespri challenge for 2025.  Our box of goodies arrived and we opened them as a class.

We have a pedometer watch for each of us.  It tells the time and records our steps for the day.

We started by setting our watches.  We then played a game of tag for our 5 minutes of fitness.  It was fun watching the step number change.

Today we had a delicious shared lunch in honour of our lovely Ailaah-Rose and Mareikura, who are finishing at Paparore School this week. It was so lovely to see their mum, Awhina who also came to Paparore School with her siblings. We will miss Ailaah-Rose and Mareikura and their whānau very much and know that they will always be a part of our kura.

Ngā mihi nui to our wonderful Te Manga whānau and tamariki for bringing such a delicious selection of kai today that we all enjoyed and then we even were able to share with lots of other tamariki.

Ngā mihi nui to Whaea Darlene for picking up our pizzas and getting things set up and Whaea Leahana for also helping to set things up and cleaning everything afterwards! Also, thank you to our teacher helpers for being wonderful helpers.

The movies have been played on the big screen at the Te Ahu Cinema in Kaitaia on Wednesday 3 September 2025. This is one of the lucky movies to be chosen from our school. This month our class have been working hard to complete films for our Te Whare Kuaka Film Festival. We had six film ideas and aimed to get at least four films completed for the film festival.

The films we completed were;

Our School Values – a film for us to learn how to be film makers and actors, and actresses whilst showcasing our school values.

Plastic Revolution – The Young Ocean Explorers save Te Oneroa a Tohe from Trashzilla!

One Shot – The basketball team won’t let Ariana join in but she doesn’t give up and shows them that all she needs is ‘One Shot’.

Pink for the Future – The future is  grey and bullies rule. Mia and Leo travel back to 2025 to find out what kindness looks like to take ‘Pink’ back to the future.

Congratulations to Tanner and Reuben (and the rest of the cast and crew) as Pink to the Future was voted to represent our class at the Manaiakalani Film Festival.

Today we had an exciting visit from the Far North Mobile Library van! The van rolled into Paparore School, bringing shelves full of amazing books right to our doorstep. Our tamariki had the special opportunity to hop on board and each choose one book for our classroom.

There was something for everyone – from funny chapter books to colourful picture books, cool non-fiction and exciting adventures. It was awesome to see the smiles and excitement as our students carefully chose a book they thought their classmates would enjoy too.

These new books will help grow our classroom library and support our goal of encouraging reading for pleasure. When tamariki have access to books they love, they’re more likely to build a lifelong love of reading.

Congratulations to our wonderful Year 4 speech semi-finalists! Each of these Year 4 speakers did a fantastic job, and we are so very proud of all of them. Sir was the judge and he had a very tough decision to make. A big congratulations to Janie, Alexis and Arthur, who will present their speeches one more time on Wednesday (after morning tea) as part of our Senior Speech competition. Best of luck to all of you!

Over the past few weeks, our class has been full of big ideas, strong opinions, and some awesome speaking! We’ve been learning how to write persuasive speeches – and everyone did such a great job.

First, we looked at how to structure our writing, using paragraphs to organise our ideas. The kids learned how to grab attention with a strong opening, give solid reasons to back up their opinions, and wrap it all up with a convincing ending. Then came the fun part – choosing a topic!

The topics ranged from “Every Class Needs a Class Pet”, “Plastic Should Be Banned”, and “Paparore School Needs a Cycle Track”. The students were passionate and thoughtful – it was clear they cared about what they were talking about.

Once the writing was done, it was time to practise presenting. Everyone stood up and gave it a go – even if they were a bit nervous. We were super proud of the effort, confidence, and support they showed each other.

It’s not easy to speak in front of a crowd, but our tamariki proved they’re up for the challenge. Tau ana!

Kaimani is interested in Germany and the German war.  Jordan helped him spray paint a plane and make it ‘fly’over a war scene he created with other students in the class.  They collected dirt, trees made a lake, added some army people and equipment.  It is great to see Kaimani working so well with the other students.

In week 2 of Term 3 we were learning the sounds k, sh, i and ck.  First we made some beautiful peacocks to display on our wall.  For our cooking lesson we made fruit kebabs.  To make our kebabs we made a recipe together on the whiteboard and shared our ideas.  Next we had to follow the recipe correctly.  Then we got to enjoy our yummy cooking.

In week 1 of Term 3 we were learning the sounds “h” and “w.”  For our garden to table cooking lesson we made hot waffles.

Te Puawai had some special messages to share with Sir for Te Rā o Tumeke Tumuaki, acknowledging all he does for our school and community!

Te Manga are ready to go for Term 3, 2025!

The class created a story around mullet being caught at the mouth of the Oruaiti river in nets.

It was a good day to catch some kanae raukura before school.  H and P were getting the net out to catch some kanae raukura.  They packed the jet skis and the net on the trailer and headed for the Oruaiti awa.  It was an incoming tide and they got out and saw lots and lots of kanae raukura.  They unloaded the jet skis and slipped them into the water, making sure the net was spread out.  

The kanae raukura were hungry.  They swam to the mangroves to eat the dead plants.  Suddenly, all the kanae raukura were in the net!  One of the kanae raukura nibbled on the net and made a hole.  The kanae raukura told the others to get out but only 5 did.

H and P saw the hole so they bought the net in.  They slipped the mullet into a bucket.

Our whole school went to see the Strike Percussion Drumming Show at Te Ahu.  We watched an amazing performance of drumming and were able to visually see the drum patterns. The audience got to participate in making music. We were all dancing in our seats!

Our lovely Prisha turned 9 on the last day of the school holidays! She kindly invited everyone to her birthday and everyone who went had a fabulous time. Prisha was also kind enough to share a whole bag of treats with the class! There are so many treats that the tamariki will enjoy them for the rest of the term – Ngā mihi nui to Prisha and her lovely whānau for thinking of our class.
