Why bullying is bad – WRITING

Why is bullying bad
Bullying behavior impacts the whole-school community. Bullying has detrimental effects on students’ health, well being and learning. It can make students feel lonely, unhappy and frightened. It’s not just the students being bullied who are affected. Most students say they don’t like seeing bullying in their school – it makes them feel worried and uncomfortable. Students who bully others are also more likely to have problems and be unhappy.
Being bullied can affect everything about a child: how they see themselves, their friends, school, and their future. Students who are bullied often experience depression, low self-esteem that may last a lifetime, shyness, loneliness, physical illnesses, and threatened or attempted self-harm. Some students miss school, see their marks drop or even leave school altogether because they have been bullied. Verbal and social/relational bullying can be just as harmful as physical bullying.
Students who engage in bullying also risk poor long term outcomes, including leaving school early. Some students engage in bullying for a short time only and then stop either because they realize it’s wrong or they are supported to learn more appropriate behavior.  A small group of students continue to bully others over many years.  Parents, whānau and schools need to support those who bully others to learn more appropriate ways to get on with others and deal with conflict and social challenges.

My Opinion Piece

Climate change has been going on for about 30 years now, it’s a bad thing and we need to change that. First of all, we need to start a change because our country may or may not get covered in water from the sea levels that rise and in 10 years or so that might be what happens. We’re also putting Arctic animals at risk and basically animals in general. The way the climate has changed has had a major effect on the Arctic: it is causing the ice to melt because of how warm it is and it’s supposed to be freezing but it’s hot enough to melt the ice and that is putting polar bears and penguins in danger because if there’s no ice for them to live on, then they basically are dead. Another reason why it’s bad for the Arctic is because the ice melting is making the sea levels rise, which is bad. Scientists are confident that global temperatures will rise for decades.

I think we could make a change for starters maybe slowly reducing greenhouse gases until we fully put releasing them to a stop and another thing we could do is learning how to live in the conditions that we already live in. Another way we could reduce climate change is by using electric cars and more fuel efficient cars; the electric cars just need to be charged and fuel efficient cars use less gas and release less gas because they are fuel efficient. Recycling could also do a massive part in this. For example, if everyone recycled it would do a better job than one person recycling. Yes, it would still help but it would be a bigger help if everyone joined in.

Coronavirus-Opinion piece

Climate change has become a big thing all across the world, just like how humans have evolved in the past years. Climate change started around the early 1800s and continues to this day. The problem of climate change has still not been solved. How could we solve this major problem?

The weather has also changed over the past years, the patterns of how the weather goes have also changed. For example, sometimes in a month, the weather could stay the same and another month another different kind of weather, causing floods, droughts, and hot weather. Just like Australia, which is now in a very bad condition because of its hot air and boiling grounds along with their fierce bush fires. Now, most of Australia is nearly half gone because of the bushfires. Even though Australia is closer to the equator it is normally just hot, but for the past years, the sun has become hotter and that is probably what caused Australia to burn down. Most animals have died and lost their homes and habitats. Some families have also lost homes.

Another major issue is that all the plastic we throw away also affects our future. Our parents and great grandparents always told us to make wise choices yet their future became ours. Our parents have left all this mess in our future. We used to use glass bottles for milk and now we use plastic bottles. Why couldn’t they just stick to using glass bottles and not using plastic bottles? Now they say it is polluting the world.

Workers running factories and burning fossil fuels turning it into fuel for cars; nearly around 21.3 billion tonnes of fossil fuels are released each year. When the fuels are released into the air, it traps in heat in the atmosphere. Climate change has also changed for the Artic cycle with all the ice sheets decreasing, making it a smaller place for arctic animals to live on. With all the ice melting It also causes the sea and ocean levels to rise.

I don’t think that climate change could reverse even if it does stop. Our world will gradually get warmer because the sun is also expanding and heating our Earth, causing crops and plants to die and could even lead to droughts. You could adjust the amount of food you eat and throw away, you can also grow your own organics in your garden, save less rubbish being thrown away with less pollution for the future.

Climate change – Opinion piece

In the early 1800’s pollution started. Factories were being built and rubbish was being made. Back then no one thought of it as a big thing, but now it is. We are getting closer to death because of climate change, pollution and more.

In 1907, plastic was created. Even then no one cared. The years went by and plastic had gotten more and more popular. Soon, nearly everywhere you looked there was plastic; Drink bottles, plastic bags, food packaging, pens.

Another problem is wood, we are cutting down so many trees, to make so many unnecessary things. I find it sad because nature gives us something and we destroy it. We become so selfish. Sadly, animals are dying out because WE are destroying their homes. Imagine if you were an animal living happily but then humans come along and ruin your home so you have nowhere to go.

Antarctica is melting, that means penguins, seals, nematodes, tardigrades and mites are dying out. If Antarctica melts then pretty much humans will die too. If Antarctica does melt then the sea level will rise and the ocean temperature will get warmer. This is bad because it will kill the sea life. The ocean temperature has risen approximately 0.13°C per decade over the last 100 years.

Scientists have said if we don’t do something about all these problems human civilisation will crumble in 2050. Maybe this is a mistake, I don’t know but I’m starting to believe it’s true. We are ruining our earth, and this needs to change.

How can we stop this issue or decrease the chance of our world being ruined?

1. Ban plastic.

2. Recycle.

3. Use a different kind of material for things.

4. Make something else for packaging.

5. Only use a fair amount of wood, make sure not too much wood is used.

Opinion piece-Climate change.

Climate change

Firstly me how would you imagine the world in the future.Probably bright healthy trees and plants that grow so beautifully but no that’s all about to change if we don’t change our ways about the community.

Earth’s atmosphere is made up of oxygen,a large amount of nitrogen and a small amount of greenhouse gases. It is made out of 78% nitrogen,21% oxygen,0.03% carbon dioxide,0.9% argon.

Greenhouse gases act like a blanket around the Earth. As it traps in the warmth from the sun and makes life on Earth possible. Without the gases too much heat would escape and the surface of earth would freeze. But since the rapid increase of climate change. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere cause the Earth to heat more and the climate to change.

The planet’s average surface temperature has raised about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit since the late 19th century. A change increased largely by more carbon dioxide and other human-made things that have cause the atmosphere to go crazy.Climate change is a big problem in the world as no one is doing anything to stop it.And it has a big effect on how the world will be in the future.

Things are changing everyday such as trees are burning and dying as they fall to the ground.More things like rubbish is being left all around the streets causing it to travel to the ocean and have a big impact on many marine animals. As they are mistaken for eating the rubbish thinking it is food.

So we need to help the community out by doing little things such as picking up rubbish you may just see lying around, switch to biodegradable things and reusable items.Think twice about your actions and do the right thing.

opinion thing

Opinion piece/editorial… my definition
Editorials, also called opinion pieces, are the places in a newspaper or magazine where the writer expresses a personal opinion. Usually, a newspaper article reports facts, and tries to give a balanced view of both sides of any issue. An editorial is the place where a journalist is allowed to really say what they think, preferably based on good research of the facts. This is why writing an opinon piece can be satisfying, as it combines knowing what you are talking about and informing people of facts, while at the same time having the freedom to say which side of an argument you actually agree with and why.

The future of climate change

The future of climate change Adults have always told us to look after our future, but what future have they left us? We’ve been told while we grow up that we need to look after our planet, plant more trees, recycle, be aware of our surroundings and take care of our animals. However, who is going to tell the adults that trees can no longer save us? It appears that planting even a trillion trees can’t save us. We need to start now in order to save our future.

As I said before, adults have always told us this is our future, but what they fail to mention is that this is the future they have left us. While some of our Prime Ministers and Presidents are relaxing in Hawaii or concerned more about how much money they’re earning, a seventeen-year-old is trying to convince us to do more for our planet and save our future. They still have time to save us, but they choose not to.
In the midst of the Australia fires, the Prime Minister of Australia (Scott Morrison) decided to go on holiday to Hawaii, while many young people donated and fundraised for the fires/firefighters. We need to realise we aren’t the only ones on this planet. During the Australian fires, which raged on for nearly 6 months, more than 1 billion animals perished in the fires, making some animals on the verge of extinction. For example, the Northern Corroboree frog which has now been considered endangered due to the fires destroying their habitats and the fires causing droughts. Many other animals are also experiencing the same things as the Northern Corroboree frog. However, this is also happening to animals all over the world.
Since humans arrived on Earth, the extinction of roughly 322 species of animals has happened. There are many ways we can help to solve this problem, such as recycling, reducing plastic waste, and educating family, friends and possibly even strangers. By educating and teaching people different ways of saving our environment and animals, we can save the world. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to help save the world, it just takes time and help. Committed and motivated people are the reason we’re still alive.
Every little step to our future counts, even if it means picking up a piece of rubbish or cutting down your showers. Each day that goes by without any change, each day an animal is closer to extinction, or humans closer to extinction.

Opinion Piece 2

Social media has changed the world, connecting people across the world, talking about some controversial things, and ideas made possible all using social media, even though Social media isn’t the easiest thing to make popular.

Social media is the most used as a form of communication with friends. When you are at home you can only talk to a few people, unless you call them over using social media or call/text. Social media is free so it would make more sense to use the free thing instead of paying to call/text someone.

Creating a social media app is easy and might get five to fifteen bugs to fix, but getting it popular needs a good idea and useful things on it. There are so many useful social media apps out there that you might not find useful but others might do.

Social media is a platform for ads and communication between people. Social media has helped with requesting supplies to and promoting businesses. The sites make money off the ads, so the site gets money for helping out businesses with their sales and communication because it’s the only way to get paid for it.

DFI BLOG comments and images 2020

Thank you for your efforts today. There was a lot to absorb, but thank goodness for able women… including Andrew (tee hee!).

I learned a great deal, and even experimented outside of Vanessa and Kerry’s directions when making a shared video for the blog: that’s a big step forward in confidence for me!

I believe it’d be useful to:
1. set a couple of   “Homework” exercises/ follow ups / form a Checklist
2. do a quick “warm up” at the beginning every new Session, where we collectively demonstrate some of the new skills acquired. That would marginally create LESS QUANTITY, but arguably  MORE QUALITY.

I do not believe ALL learners Navigate computers comfortably, or know all of the basic Keys, icons, buttons or shortcuts.  Would a PRINTED PAGE of useful DIAGRAMS per session (no more than 6x examples!) be useful?
 – I am for instance not a touch typist, and plod through keys and typing – but do get there! But that creates a schism – while I am typing, I cannot hear all ongoing recommendations. So it is important to demo exercises/ shortcuts etc. but ALWAYS follow up.

The new learners at BOIC on 4/3/20

Kerry I look forward to some useful extra Tuition re students sending me multiple images: thus far it has been by gmail, very clunky and laboured.  I also need to be able to Edit/ Print those sent images with least mucking around- so I am open to useful suggestions re Drive etc?

Day Two – Workflow

Another day of non-stop information and learning about Google tools.  Some great stuff, starting with Ann’s presentation about Manaiakalani pedagogy.  She really emphasised the SAMR progression where ideally our use of digital tools creates a new way of learning, a new task that would not be possible without our digital capability.  The challenge this morning was the multi-sensory message – talking, slide-show, chats all happening at the same time.

Like last week I learned some useful shortcuts and tools that will help my efficiency – from my DFI Notes doc:

  • Pin tab – right-click tab and choose “pin”
  • “Keep” – I can make my work to-do list on my phone! Just what I need!
  • Put unread emails on the top of the list.
  • “Priority” in Drive – create workspaces with tabs, bookmarks.
  • Organising tabs and folders.

– all small things but I can use them all every day!

With students, the hangouts may be useful with my senior GEO students, if we close the school for coronavirus!

Three old BOIC teachers looking a bit possum-in-the-headlights today.

Later we tried recording a hangout but the Apple recording wasn’t quite set up properly.  It was an Apple design fault I am sure.

Mmmm …. the question is “what have I learned that might help in my personal life?”   To be fair, I use Google less and less in my personal life.  My whole work day is using these tools more and more, so less and less seems an important focus in my personal life.
