My favourite New Zealand town would have to be Opononi, mainly because of of the sand dunning, but also it’s a town with heaps of nice people and just everything you need, like a restaurant, a bakery, a four square, a school, and beautiful views. Its also not far away from the nationwide famous Tane Mahuta. Here is one of the views from Opononi.

 My favourite town in NZ is Kawakawa because they have the meanest pies.

The Karate Kid is a film about a young boy named Daniel and his karate journey with his Master, Mr Miyagi.

Mr Miyagi is somewhat of a father figure to Daniel as he helps,protects, teaches him karate and about his

culture constantly. Mr Miyagi has helped Daniel overcome a lot of his fears and encouraged him to stand

up for himself from the Cobra Kais. They both trust each other and through their journey have gotten closer

and gotten to know more about each other. At the tournament Mr Miyagi is always supporting Daniel and

realises this is something Daniel really cares about.

My favourite character is Mr Miyagi because of how helpful and kind he is towards Daniel. Mr Miyagi is very patient. He stayed and continued to put up with Daniel even when he doubted him. He taught him simple karate through house chores and that somehow managed to gain Daniels trust a lot more. He saved Daniel multiple times from the cobra kais and managed to get them off his back. He is a very generous man as he gave Daniel one of his cars for his birthday. He taught Daniel karate but told him “Fighting is always the last answer” and “Karate for defense only.” This tells us that Mr Miyagi has a different view than Daniel and that he only uses karate to protect and defend others.

An event which made me laugh was when Daniel and Mr Miyagi were out on the boat and Mr Miyagi purposefully rocked the boat so Daniel would fall off. Mr Miyagi was teaching Daniel a lesson about balance. He told Daniel to get on the bow of the boat and practice some of the karate moves he already knew. Daniel got a bit too cocky so Mr Miyagi made him fall off the boat. Mr Miyagi cracked up laughing and so did I.

I would recommend this text to other teenagers because it is a thrilling story with a bit of violence and romance that teenagers these days seem to like. This story also has a good message in it. When the main character is thrown around and continuously bullied he never stops standing up for himself or Ali. Mr Miyagi who he met on the way helped him to push through all the bullies and overcome them. In the tournament Daniel never gave up and finally showed them what he could do and they no longer could bother him. Alot of teengaers these days with bullies can relate to the feeling but they need to do what Daniel did.“ Push through and never give up”

We have also been learning about different film terms and techniques.  

Below are my film shots and a grid to my analysis from short clips of a film. This term for English we are doing the topic film studies. We have been learning about the different camera shots and angles that people may use in movies or videos. Below is a photo of some of the different types of camera shots. We then watched the movie Karate kid. As we went period through period watching this movie we had to write down some key events that happened in the movie. When we finished the movie we had work on hapara workspace to do. We had to watch a small clip from the movie and take a few images from that small clip to analyse. Over the past few weeks 10M has been working on two assigned assessments. The first one we were meant to have completed by the end of term two, however, the due date was moved over to the end of week one of term three. The second assessment was due at the end of the second week of term three. The first assessment was differentiating fact from fiction after having read an article of our own choosing. After reading through the information that was on our chosen article we would have to decide whether the article is fact or fiction, based on certain questions that were shown on the instructions for the assessment itself. We analysed the article by asking ourselves questions regarding whether the article was factual or fictional. My understanding as to why this assessment was assigned to us was to give us an idea of how to tell what is true or not; how to tell if what people post around the internet can be trusted or not. I think that this is a useful skill that could be used on any piece of writing. I chose an article about gender equality. 

The second assessment was to vaguely plan our future. We were assigned to plan the sort of lifestyle we would want to have, we have to select a job/career that we would like to have later on in life. Based on our income from that chosen job we would have to calculate our monthly/weekly expenses for food, clothes, eating out, holidays, etc. We initially had to create a potential life we could live in the future. What I think this assessment was formulated for, was to give us youngsters an idea of what life is like as someone who works and lives away from their parents, someone who is responsible for potentially looking after their own family. This assessment has helped gain a better understanding of how young adults, adults, and elders make things work out for themselves and their family, in relation of money and their well being.

 Here’s how we can prove the earth is round. 

The first way:

We get two big wooden poles. We stick one in the ocean floor, at the coast.

We get another, and stick it into the ocean floor 20 km away. Make sure both poles are the same height above sea level. 

Drill a hole in the one at the coast. Make sure the hole points towards the other pole. 

Shine a strong laser through the hole. 

Contact a person viewing the other pole. If the laser hit the other pole at where the hole should be, we can see that the eart is indeed flat. Otherwise, if it hit above the pole or above where the hole should be, the earth is round. This drawing should show it.

Round earth:

Notice how none of the entities are inbalanced in the round earth one, whereas in the one where the ground was flat, the ones tothe far left and right were about to fall, while the middleone noticed no difference.

Obviously, we don’t feel like we’re on a sloped surface if we are far from the North pole, so we can see from what we’ve observed here that the earth probably isn’t flat.

 Kia ora my name is Havahna I am a year 10 student at the college known as Bay Of Islands, I am also 14 year of age which makes me the second youngest sibling out of 7. I have  plenty of hobbies and interests including dance, cooking, arts and crafts, painting and swimming. I may not have a lot of work experience but I have a few at least and those are babysitting, farming and filing papers. I think that a skill that I took away from each of these experiences was how to carry a sheep without hurting yourself or the animals, practical child care techniques, how to sort papers into  the correct files and how to put up a fence. Skills that I specially uphold are knowing how to cook proper meals, knowing how to clean thoroughly, I also know how to fix a few broken things and I am pretty good at looking after myself. Some values that I cherish everyday are doing things without being told, respecting the elders even just by giving them a smile and my family, friends, cousins, parents just everyone. Some of my past achievements may not be the best. I think that they bring out the best of my capabilities like the digital award was awarded to me twice, the attendance award for 97%, a consistent effort award and a responsible award was also awarded to me twice. Some goals that I hope to achieve are to learn new skills, meet new people, experience different jobs and interact with anyone. Some strengths that I know that I have is reading, which is one of my biggest strengths, I always show up. I never not show up because being late is better than never and I always try to get the work done on time. I think some of my biggest weaknesses to work on will have to be my grammar, communication skills, presentation skills and taking up bigger challenges.
