Hello my fellow readers,
For today’s science experiment, we are going to be trying to break a wine glass with our voice, this one will be hard to do because you are going to be using a lot of your voice, which can lead to vocal cord damages. And that can also depend on the tone you are using, if I were you I really recommend using a low toned voice, since using high pitch will surely damage your vocal cords.
Research:
Method
Equipment:
- Wine glass (recommended to be a crystal one & a thin rim)
- Safety Glasses
- Plastic
Instructions:
- Gather your equipment.
- Find a safe place to do it, it is best to do it outside in an open space.
- Put the straw into the wine glass.
- Put your safety glasses on.
- Flick the top of your wine glass to find the resonance tone.
- Hold the glass to your mouth about 5 cm away.
- Start sweeping – slowly increasing the tone of your voice, low to high – to the glass until you get the frequency, you know you’ve reached your frequency when the straw inside the cup starts to shake. Then what you are going to do is hold that frequency till it breaks that glass. (Do not hold for any longer if your throat starts to hurt)
Results:
(Come back on Wednesday for the results)
Discussion:
Why does the glass break with our voice?
The sound wave may make the glass vibrate big enough. The sound wave will increase its capacity and eventually it will be enough to make the glass break.
