 In writing with Mrs Alpers we have been learning to do vocabulary activities. Today we did a “I can write” Halloween vocab task. For me it was very simple and not too hard to do. We had multiple sentences to write and describe different things. Such as the origin of Halloween.

Anyways, Halloween can be a celebration for some people. It’s a night of trick or treating and dressing up. Some also carve pumpkins and add decorations to their house. This is commonly celebrated on the 31st of October every year. 

Halloween came from a Celtic Festival Samhain. It’s celebrating the dead and having bonfires. This can also be referred to as the dark half of the year.

Hello and welcome back to my blog,

Today we’re going to talk about what we learned about New Zealand Gold Rush. The first thing that we did is that we watched video about what happened in the New Zealand Gold Rush. I learned that there’s a guy called John Howell  who started the hunt for gold in New Zealand. I also learned the work conditions were tough and a lot of people suffered to try to get a gram of gold. After that we had to read a lot articles and made a DLO. Here my work.

There was also another where I learnt more about some vocab words. They were also about some things about governments. Now here is the work I have done:

Vocab task –

Values – Something that you usually follow, it can also install morals in someone

 Politics – The beliefs of the government of your country, it usually comes up in debates and things as such

 Elections – How a leader is decided upon

 Governance – The actions of a government

 Policies – They are kind of like lore depending on what party is in

 Economics – Knowledge about production consumption and transfer of wealth

Hello bloggers today I will be talking about gold mining and discrimination

Gold mining & discrimination is all about the gold rush that happened here in New Zealand mainly Otago Dunedin. It was very rare cause there were mainly like tiny specs of it but sometimes if you are at there at the right time you might find a massive nugget of gold. People would dig for days sometimes even months just for this gold. You might just find gold and try to sell it but it might turn out to be fools gold. Fool’s gold is a type of rock that looks like gold but its actually just a shiny rock looking thing.

During the 1800s thousands of Chinese people left there homes and rode a boat to earn money on the gold fields.  The voyage from China to New Zealand was very dangerous and very far. Very bad storms could of happened. When the Chinese people came there just stood out and there luggage was made out of bamboo baskets and they carried the luggage on there back. The Chinese people were abused on the Goldfield. There were jeered and also received beatings or had stones thrown at them.

Because of their language and the culture and also the unfriendliness of the Europeans. The Chinese people had to support each other from the hate. They didn’t want to live close to the Europeans of the abuse and beatings so they would live far away from them. The miners were very hard workers they didn’t give up until they got the job done.

The poem I just read which is called following gold I think what he meant was that on the first line he meant he left his home hoping to find gold and has a lot of question like what if he doesn’t find gold or maybe what if the someone finds out I found gold. The second line is basically saying is what are the chances of finding gold and whats the fate of him stumbling upon gold. The next one means what if someone else find gold and the person in the poem is determined to get that gold. The following line is about him keeping gold close to him self just incase someone takes it. The last two are about i’m not to sure.

Here are some facts about Chinese gold miners

1. Ah Lum saved a British miner from drowning and he became a hero
2. The Chinese people came from Guangdong Province Also known as in Southern China
3. The area that the Chinese came from was very overpopulated and still shaken by the opium war.

On 28th of October, we experienced a seminar sort of event with Daisy. She is a slam poet, presenter, and guest speaker along with many other things, she is incredibly talented. 

We first started off with joining together in a circle and playing a game; this game is similar to fruit salad. Someone would stand up in the middle of the circle and say something true to them, people who have experienced the same will also stand up and switch chairs with the other person/people. 

The second activity that we did was to walk around in the circle and do the things she told us. Daisy says that this activity was to help us to be aware of our surroundings but to also be dynamic in how we move. 

Thirdly, we got into pairs and did an activity where we had to make eye contact with our buddy whilst creating a portrait of them. It was extremely awkward to do, but it was a great experience.

Lastly, our last activity was world-play. Daisy explained it to us in great detail, our word was ocean and we wrote many words relating to that word. The second part of that activity was to say our words as a group without making a mistake.

We finished off the session with a poem from her. I was extremely inspired by the things that she said in her poem and I learned a lot from her. It was an amazing experience and I am truly honoured that she chose to come in.
