Hello, my name is Lilly Bell and right now I will be talking about ANZAC day.
ANZAC day stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
We celebrate ANZAC day because it was the day the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps
landed at ANZAC Cove, because they were trying to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula.
In case you didn't know, the ANZAC colours are red and black, the colours of the poppies they
saw when they landed at Gallipoli, Turkey.
And did you know that Gallipoli is not a town?
ANZAC day is on the 25th of April.
The name ANZAC comes from the first world war, that lasted from 1915 to 1918.
On ANZAC day many celebrations are held for all the men who fought in the war.
And did you know that many people would face their age just to go to war??
The people who chose to fight were paid, and many people hadn't been on a boat, and the
people who hadn't thought it would be a great opportunity.
Around 70 million people died, plus about twice as many were wounded.
The people in the war were sent ANZAC biscuits, and the soldiers would add water to them to
make porridge.
At that time, the ANZAC biscuits were square. Crazy, right?!
The people in the war used pigeons to message each other by tying letters to
their legs. Believe it or not, but the amount of Anzac that died in the war was 2000!!
