Electromagnets Science

This is a blog I was suppose to do last week but I wasn’t there for a reason that i’m definitely not gonna tell you random people. Haha I’m joking I won’t tell though. They did it last week and did it yesterday. I came back yesterday and I was confused but someone explained it to me. Now I have to explain to my twin sister which will take forever but that’s ok.

Aim: To make an electromagnet

Research: youtube video

Equipment:

  • Big nail
  • Wires with alligator clips
  • Variable resistor
  • Power Supply
  • paperclips
  • sellotape

Method:

  1. Wrap one wire around the nail as much as possible, and sellotape it so that it doesn’t unroll. This is the electromagnet.
  2. Connect the power supply in series to the variable resistor and the electromagnet.
  3. Change the voltage on the power supply, and the resistance on the variable resistor so that the electromagnet works.
  4. Pick up some paperclips.
  5. Take a photo of everything for your results.

Results: Photos of everything, and the magnet holding up the paperclip. (I did it I just didn’t have my phone or anything to take a photo with)

Discussion: 

  1. How many paperclips did you pick up? None
  2. Is that a strong magnet? Not really
  3. How could you make a stronger electromagnet? By more electricity
  4. What happens when you turn the power supply off? I don’t know I ain’t Einstein
  5. How do electromagnets work? Electricity
  6. How do electric motors work? I don’t know bro sorry teacher didn’t mention all this when he was explaining haha.
