Reflection Surfaces – Y9 Physics, Science

Task: Learn reflection and refraction.

1. How do light rays behave on flat, convex, concave, mirrors?

Flat: The light ray reflects back at the same angle.

Convex: The light rays bounce inwards or get wide.

Concave: The light ray bounce outwards or spreads out.

Mirrors: The light ray spreads out from the source in all directions and when striking a mirror they are reflected at an angle determined by the angle at which the light arrives.

What is reflection? The act of reflecting is like casting back a light or heat, mirroring, or giving back or showing an image. Basically bouncing off an object.

2. What is refraction?  Light passing through an object (If the object is transparent/translucent) then refraction can happen.

How do different mediums change refraction? Refraction is when the light waves change direction as it passes through a medium, also called the bending of light. This happens because the speed and wavelength of the light change as it goes through different mediums.

Light Boxes: Refraction

When light travels from the air through other mediums it slows down and will bend towards the normal lane. This is because the other mediums are more dense than air.

Examples are:

  • Water
  • Glass
  • Diamond

If it’s leaving these mediums into the air, the light ray will speed up and it will bend away from the normal lane.
