On the 29.11.23 a lady named Sophie from St John Ed came to teach us how to save a life and first aid. I think it was exciting yet interesting because one day we might need to save a life and this would come in handy. 

First she gave us an introduction about what she does and what she is here to do. Then we talked about what the three life saving brigades do, the police can put people into custody for committing crimes, the fire people are there to put out fires and rescue animals from trees, lastly the hospital is there to help the hurt and those in pain. Then Sophie started to demonstrate some stuff with the dummy.

Some of the stuff she demonstrated was the D R S A B which I will tell you about later. She also showed us CPR which we will learn in year 7 and 8. So back to the D R S A B, the things that it stands for is Danger – look for danger, Response – try to wake up and find a sign of life, Send – Send for help, Airways – see if something is blocking their throat or nose, Breathing – find a sign that the person is breathing.

The last two things were first aid and rotating the person. First was rotating the person which is turning the person on its side, you move the hand closest to you out straight, then you need to get the leg farthest away from you and  tuck the foot to the bottom. Next you put both hands on the knee bone and pull it towards you and get the hand farthest away from you and make it high five the other.

Next we had to practise bandaging a knee, So you had to get a soft pad and place it down then wrap the bandage around it nice and tight, lastly elevate it so the blood doesn’t run.

I love this, I can’t wait to learn more when I’m older. I think that this is a useful skill to learn and if I had to rate it, it would be a 10 / 10!

Yesterday my class (room 2) had Sophie come in. Sophie is from St John. We learnt about lots of stuff like how to help people in an emergency first we had to get into buddies and one had to pretend to be Unconscious and all floppy. This was for us to practise doing the D R S A B. The D stands for danger, so before helping someone you have to look for danger. R is for response. Which means you have to check if they are responsive by tapping their shoulder. S is for sending help. A is for the airway, so you need to check if there is anything in their mouth, in case there is something blocking their throat. B is the final one for breathing. You need to check if they are breathing by leaning down and listening for breathing and looking to see if their chest is moving. Then we did different emergency services like fire, police and ambulance. 

After that we learnt about how to help someone with a heavy bleed. We got into pairs and practised bandaging each other.This was fun. My favourite thing was pretending to be unconscious it was a good day 

On Wednesday someone from St John called Sophie came to NBC to teach the school first aid. 

We started by learning CPR and different emergencies Sophie did CPR on a test dummy called bob. Next we went into pears and had to pretend to be unconscious. I was with a classmate called James. Both of us got to have a turn being unconscious. There were prizes for the best unconscious person and in one of them there were three people and all three got a footstep. I enjoyed this and would do it again.
