Inquiry 😃
Hey bloggers ,
Date : 30/4/24
Today I learnt some new facts about flax / Kaponga.
For Inquiry we have been learning about flora and fauna, I choose flax , which has been on earth for 360 million years. w(°o°)w
Here’s are some more facts about the flax plant.
- The true blue color of the flax plant produces a blue fabric dye, and when the flower is boiled, it produces a range of colors from tan to apricot. Flax was first used as a thread and made into linen cloth. Flax fibers were the main source of cloth until the growth of the cotton industry in the 1800s.
- Flax seeds are protein powerhouses! There’s around 18 grams of protein in every 100 gram serving of flaxseed, which is even higher than the protein content of chia seeds. Ground flax is therefore an excellent addition to protein shakes, and can even add extra protein content to a cake or pancake mix.
- Flax was a valuable resource to Europeans during the nineteenth century because of its strength. It was New Zealand’s biggest export by far until wool and frozen mutton took over later in the century. Today, flax is used in soaps, hand creams, shampoos and a range of other cosmetics.
- Light: A full sun site is preferred. Soil: Average to sandy well-drained soils are preferred. Flax does not do well in heavy clay or in wet conditions. If direct seeding, rake soil and broadcast seeds, raking in and tamping down to make good soil to seed contact.
-
How tall can flax grow you might ask it grows up to 3-8 metres.
- The roots could be crushed to make poultices for skin infections, and to produce a juice with disinfectant and laxative properties. The gum from the base of the leaves eased pain and healed wounds, especially burns. The leaves themselves could be used as bandages and to secure broken bones.
- 1. Linen Is Moisture-Resistant, Hypoallergenic And Breathable. Linen comes from the cellulose-based fibers of the flax plant that are hypoallergenic, moisture-resistant and breathable. In fact, linen can absorb dampness up to 20% without even feeling wet.
- lax (Linum usitatissimum) is a rather tough plant that adds a certain whimsy to any wildflower garden and it is easy to grow. This erect annual herb grows up to three feet tall, donning numerous flat gray-green leaves.
- New Zealand flax is a rather slow-growing species that can take several years before small seedlings mature into full-sized plants. On mature plants, the flower stalks shoot up above the leaves and produce curving, tubular red or yellow blossoms that are very high in nectar and are a hummingbird favorite
- . Flax varieties may be distinguished by the colour of the flower parts which can range from a dark to a very light blue, white or pale pink. The anthers are a shade of blue or are yellow. The style and filaments that bear the anthers are blue or colourless.
- Flax is two to three times stronger than cotton, making it one of the strongest natural fibers known. The flax plant species Linum usitatis- simum is made into linen fabrics, linseed oil, and even linoleum flooring. Its acreage in the United States dropped in the 1920s with the arrival of synthetic fibers.

T2 Inquiry Create Task 1
hello dear peep, (person)
This blog post may look similar to 2 others I am going to post very soon, but this is actually a part of our tasks. Anyways, we are still continuing our New Zealand Flora And Fauna create tasks from last term. I also finished this task last term, but again I didn’t get the opportunity to blog it. I had to a fact file about 3 of New Zealand’s Native Plants and our only options were Harekeke, (Flax) Tī kōuka, (Cabbage Tree) and Huruwhenua, (Fern). I did the cabbage tree first but it may look a bit rushed as I was rushing at that time.
goodbye dear peep.

Hey guys, today’s blog will be about 1 native plant… The Cabbage tree!!! I got some amazing facts off the Department of Conservation. First, I watched the videos on the slide with the Cabbage tree. Then, tapped on the link leafing to the Department of Conservation, where I summarized the first facts that popped up. My sentences were up to 10-20 words long. Learning about the Cabbage tree was amazing I heard the Captain Cook and his men named it.
