In the last few weeks of Humanities, my class has been reading a book of our choice and doing tasks on the book. I chose the book ‘Jasper Jones’ by Craig Silvey. For Week 1, I did two tasks. They were called ‘Setting Drawing Activity’ and ‘Character Analysis Activity’.
The Setting Drawing Activity is more of an artistic task, as opposed to writing. I chose this task because I like to draw, so it seemed like a fun task. The task is to draw a picture of one of the settings described in the book, and draw four arrows pointing to parts of the picture with direct quotations from the book supporting that part of the setting. Underneath is my setting drawing.

I quite liked this task because I enjoy drawing, but it did take quite a long time to do. Overall it was quite fun, so it was probably one of my favourites to do.
For the Character Analysis Activity, you choose a character to analyse based on their presence in the book so far. It’s best to choose a character you know a lot about, one of the main characters. I did mine on the main character, Charlie Bucktin. Below is the completed task.
| Answer and all related details (point form notes are accepted) | Specific evidence from the book to support your answer | |
| Character Name | Charlie Bucktin | NO ANSWER APPLICABLE |
| Appearance | No description given. | |
| Personality | Charlie is smart and a rule-follower. He worries quite often about many things. He is curious and tries to find the answer to everything. | Charlie knows long words that other kids in his class don’t know, like ‘obstreperous’. He asks a lot of questions. |
| Relationships (People they are friendly AND unfriendly with) | Charlie is friends with Jeffery Lu. He has a crush on a girl called Eliza Wishart. He trusts Jasper Jones. | In the book, Charlie writes ‘For some reason, I just know that if I’m in Jasper Jones’s corner, it’s going to be okay.’ He is close with Jeffery Lu from the beginning of the book, and they spend a lot of time together. |
| Prediction for what will happen to character in the future | I think Charlie will become a bit more rebellious/independent. | He has talked back to his parents, which he usually never does. |
This task was one of the tasks I didn’t like so much. I found it hard to find the evidence so it made the task a bit frustrating.
Thanks for reading!
