Textiles Reusable Makeup Wipe

In Textiles we covered the whole of sustainability and made projects inspire by that context. We had a choice to chose from the list or come up with an idea of how to show sustainable sewing. I chose to make makeup wipes with a drawstring bag that goes a long with it.

The makeup wipes are rounds with one side from a towel and the other side from scrap fabric. I chose a white towel and a fabric with an animal print. In the video i watched it said that we needed to use a buttonhole stitch around the makeup rounds to secure it together. I made a total of five makeup rounds.

Here is the video I followed:

For the drawstring bag, I made a simple one with two strings. I used the same animal print and a brown fabric for the other side. We had to cut out a rectangle or square shape out of our 2 chosen fabric. Then we pinned them together with the good side facing inwards. I used a sewing machine for the drawstring bag. I had to back stitch and then sew two opposite sides together. Then I sewed the bottom side. Then for the the top bit I folded it about 2cm long and ironed it. After that I used pinking shears and went around all the sides of the fabric. This was to stop it from breaking apart. And then I sewed the top by following along the edge. You sew it all around with needing to back stitch. Then I opened up a bit of the top to but the thread in. Using a bodkin I put the string all the way around and tied it at the end. I repeated it for the other string too.

I think this is a good way to be sustainable. In my experience I often use makeup wipes and end up running out in a few weeks. With reusable makeup wipes I won’t have to keep buying so much and it will also lessen my carbon footprint.

Here is what they look like:
