IY Plan
The RTLB and I met to create the IY Plan. I have not yet completed the course but the RTLB suggested that it would be very beneficial for me to attend it. I found the plan to be very interesting. The plan covers the main targeted behaviour, why it occurs, when it occurs, what we want the behaviour to be and gives me a variety of strategies to use with this particular child. I started using these suggestions straight away.
Space in Class
I got another desk and put it in a corner of my room. I spoke to the tamariki about what and who it is for. This was put in place to give the tamariki their own sense of space and room.

Big Brother Big Sister
I went and spoke to the tuakana my child had for Big Brother, Big Sister and we spoke about their interests and hobbies, the activities they were doing together and what they enjoyed doing. This enabled me to better connect with the child in question and create activities which would better engage them as they were already interested in that area.
Coreboard
Another suggestion I implemented was having a coreboard for one of the tamariki. This was to help implement routines and help the child to self manage more successfully. This tamariki was not doing the right thing at the right time. She didn’t want to go to Karakia, or a particular subject and wanted to do her own thing in her own time. Using the board she could visually see what she was expected to do and when and she was due for a reward if she had done as required.

Check in Check Out
The check in and check out programme was set up for one of the tamariki. This system meant the student has three goals which they helped develop and were talked about before being chosen. For each teaching block they get three stickers to indicate if they have achieved the goals in that block. A buddy teacher then signs it off each block. At the end of the week if they have completed the stickers, they get an award.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness videos were found on YouTube and are used each day in class. We use various videos generally after break times to bring tamariki back into the learning space. This brings their energies down and gets them ready to engage. Here is the Channel I use.

For example, belly breathing gets the tamariki doing deep breaths and calming their nervous system.
Restorative Justice
I started to use the techniques and scripts from the booklet provided by the SLT. I worked on getting everything on the Mana escalation scale and whare implemented into my classroom as best I could. This will help with keeping behaviours low and I know what to do when things escalate.
So how did this all go for me and my tamariki?
