In today’s lesson we did an experiment about looking at banana DNA.
The method to extract the DNA is as such:
- Mush some banana (Nos skin) in a zip lock bag with a splash of water and a small teaspoon of salt.
- Strain a solution through a cloth and into a beaker.
- Add a squirt of dish washing liquid and stir
- Pour into a test tube
- Place the test tube in a beaker filled with warm water
- Leave for 10 mins
- Slowly pour 5 ML of ethanol down the inside of the test tube.
After the ethanol interacted with the banana mixture there was a thin line between both mixtures. The line between them was a milky white with small little strands which were the bananas DNA.
