Banana DNA extraction – Science

In today’s lesson we did an experiment about looking at banana DNA.

The method to extract the DNA is as such:

  1. Mush some banana (Nos skin) in a zip lock bag with a splash of water and a small teaspoon of salt.
  2. Strain a solution through a cloth and into a beaker.
  3. Add a squirt of dish washing liquid and stir
  4. Pour into a test tube
  5. Place the test tube in a beaker filled with warm water
  6. Leave for 10 mins
  7. Slowly pour 5 ML of ethanol down the inside of the test tube.

After the ethanol interacted with the banana mixture there was a thin line between both mixtures. The line between them was a milky white with small little strands which were the bananas DNA.
