I have been looking forward to today’s new learning, as I feel like I have become a bit stale in my teaching of reading. Although many ‘pieces’ of reading/ literacy PD have come my way over the past few years, they have felt very fragmented and lacked connections with a big picture. What I have seen and heard today has been nothing new, as these are all the things I have had over the years, but the exciting part of this PD is I feel like it is going to be the glue that I have felt is missing – I may soon get to see what this might look like when it is all pieced together in the right way (is there a right way?).
While my big goal is to have an environment full of avid, engaged readers who can tick off all the qualities of a good reader, the first question must be: What do I need to do as a teacher?
Questions I have after today’s learning which will require further questioning/ reading/ discussion/ pondering:
- How do I provide better opportunities for, and encourage, students to read for pleasure?
- How do I better engage students in reading for purposes other than pleasure?
- How well does my planning cater for what I’m trying to achieve?
Things I would like to implement in the next little while:
- Ground rules for talk and opportunities to practise this, and working towards students evaluating their own conversation.
- Gaining an understanding of my learners’ reading profiles.
- Looking at my reading planning and rejigging (especially) what my follow up activities could look like.
- Tidying up what our reading assessment looks like in the senior part of our school so it is more user friendly for our diverse learners.
I look forward to meeting with Dana, my mentor, so we can discuss lots of ideas on how I help build exceptional readers
