Reader Survey Reflection

My reader survey results were interesting to look through and confirms my thinking that reading at school, or even in students’ own time, is not a favourite thing to do.  The ‘Very Like Me’ option sat at 6.7% for reading at school, 10.9% for reading books in my own time for enjoyment, and 15.2% for reading other digital texts in my own time for enjoyment, although I suspect some students may have been thinking of Tik Tok when they chose this option!  Only 8.7% thought that reading in their own time was helpful to them in someway.

The types of texts that came through strongly as ones that students do enjoy if they read them were comics/ graphic novels, mystery, horror/thriller/ and sports.

So, where to from here?

-Investigating if my students know what types of text there are and how to access them.

-Looking at ways to better use our school library and making students aware of what is in there.

-Making myself more aware of what is popular reading for Y6-8 students, and reading more of it myself (for as much as I love reading, I don’t read many of these sorts of texts).

-Having a display in my class of book recommendations, ones that I enjoy as well as ones that others have recommended, with the goal being that students can put their own recommendations there too.
