Today’s PD around text selection has prompted my brain to go into overdrive and I’m now left thinking how on earth I’m going to put this all together! However, when I think about it, I do some of these things already, some things need fine tuning, and some concepts are new altogether.
The things I think I already do include:
-T-shaped literacy
-Use a variety of texts/ multi-modal activities
-Choose texts well around topic/ themes.
-Read to students
-Talk moves/ Deliberate Acts of Teaching
After today’s learning, I think there is a lot I need to think more deeply about, in terms of what I do and what the purpose is, as well and making it all manageable. Things I’d like to focus on in the next 3 school weeks are:
-Really thinking about the learning when choosing a variety of genres/ texts, and knowing how they support or complement each other. One thing I’ve not thought of is a text that perhaps challenges the ideas in the anchor text, which would encourage a multi-sided korero. This would be helpful for building the Ground Rule around looking at both sides of an issue.
-The importance of the anchor text – how it is used effectively alongside a range of resources.
-Authentic and robust reading mileage – how do I facilitate this with a group of students whose self-managing skills require some work?
I look forward to the holiday period where I can spend some quality time looking through resources and taskboards to get an idea of the sorts of things people are using and to broaden my own repertoire of engaging tasks and resources to aide my students in their reading engagement and achievements.
