Chicken Leg Blog

Date of Dissection- 9/05/25

My group consisted of 3 people, they were: Nahvarna, Annemieke and Lucy (me) 🙂

Aim: To see visually what we learnt in class about bones, muscles and joints.

Research: The anatomy of a chicken wing consists of a structure of bones. The wing’s main bones are: The humerus (upper wing), radius & ulna (lower wing), metacarpals and phalanges (wing tip). Did you know that the Metacarpals and the Phalanges are in birds to allow feather attachment? There are 3 sections of a chicken wing, they are the wing tip, the drumette and the flat which is also known as the wingette.

Method:

1. First thing we did was take the skin off

2.  Secondly, we look at the muscles and tendons from inside of the chicken leg

3. Thirdly, we moved the bones to see the muscles move

4. Then remove the muscles to look at the bones

5. Look at the joints, cartilage and ligaments

Results: Here are some photos (and 1 video) of the Dissection down below-

Discussion: The science behind dissecting a chicken wing is to explore the function of muscles, joints and bones. The Dissection of the chicken wing showed us all the parts of a chicken wing. This dissection has allowed us to explore the inner movement of the wing, such as moving ligaments, tendons and bones. The dissection was interesting and I learnt a lot about muscles, ligaments and joints. The muscles inside the wing show movement and the ligaments attach the bones. A joint is where 2 bones meet together with cartilage which cushions them.

Conclusion: I think that the Dissection worked how we were hoping for but if I did it again the only thing that I would change is by cutting the Chicken wing more gently. Overall, the dissection went well and it was very informative, I felt sick at lunch when I ate my chicken sandwich.
