Symbolism about ‘Catherine called birdy’

The birds in the movie  ‘Catherine called Birdy’ symbolise her freedom, and her independence. Throughout the whole movie, Catherine was forced to marry a man that her parents arranged for her. There was two meanings in this one scene and the first one being Catherine released all of her birds that she had kept inside a cage symbolises Catherine’s freedom, and the second one is when one of the bird dropped dead right as soon as she let it go which symbolises all the pain and suffering she has went through had finally ended. So, overall the author used the birds to help us understand what Catherine feels, and to show us how much she has suffered her whole life. For me what the author is trying to tell us is that the birds are not meant to be kept in a cage, they just want to be free and that is exactly what Catherine feels like until she was set free by her father then she set the birds free as a symbolism to her freedom, and independence.
