today is conservation week so we
are gonna here about this story I have
found. Title: What is the Depart￾ment of Conservation (DOC)?
The Department of Conservation,
or DOC, is a group of people in
New Zealand who help protect na￾ture. Their job is to take care of
our special places, like forests, rivers,
oceans, and mountains. They also
help save native animals and plants
that are in danger. DOC is part of
the New Zealand Government, and
their job is very important. They
work to keep Aotearoa clean, green,
and safe for everyone including ani￾mals, plants, and people. They be￾lieve in kaitiakitanga, which means
caring for the land, the water, and
all living things. They want to make
sure nature is looked after now and
for the future.Saving Our Taonga
Species New Zealand has animals
and plants that live nowhere else in
the world. They are called native
or endemic species. Some are very
rare, and DOC works hard to pro￾tect them from harm. DOC helps
animals like: The kiwi, a flightless
bird and New Zealand’s national sym￾bol. The k¯ak¯ap¯o, a large green par￾rot that can’t fly and is nearly ex￾tinct The takah¯e, once thought to be
extinct but found again in Fiordland
The whio (blue duck), which lives in
fast-flowing rivers Many of these ani￾mals are in danger because of preda￾tors like rats, stoats, possums, and
cats. These pests were brought here
by people and hunt native birds and
eggs. DOC uses special tools like:
Predator traps, Poison bait stations,
Fenced sanctuaries to keep pests out,
Breeding programs to raise and re￾lease endangered animals
They also look after rare plants
and native bush, helping with re￾planting, weed removal, and forest. this is what my story is about hope you liked it.
