Some things I have learned this term about rock pool and ocean creatures.
1. Sharks are an ancient species, having roamed the oceans for over 400 million years, which is even longer than trees have existed.
2. Jellyfish have a very long evolutionary history, having been around for over 650 million years, predating both sharks and dinosaurs. They do not have a heart or brain but can still move, catch food, and some even glow at night.
3. The blue whale holds the record for being the largest animal to have ever lived on Earth. Its heart can be as large as a small car, and its tongue can weigh as much as an elephant.
4. Unlike most animals, only male seahorses give birth to their young. They carry the fertilized eggs in a pouch until they are developed enough to swim away on their own.
5. Some ocean creatures, such as clownfish, can change their gender. If the dominant female in a group dies, the largest male will transform into a female to take her place.
