Explanation blog post!

What is kapa haka

Have you ever done kapa haka? If you haven’t listen in close. Kapa haka is a maori singing and dance group. Its mostly competition between groups and seeing who is the best. People think kapa haka is just singing and dancing it’s about how you perform and the discipline your group has!

You need to have a lot of discipline. Be proud of everything you do on stage. For example you need to smile a lot and you need to have purpose in your actions because you are representing your culture and where you come from. The type of music is very interesting because the kind of song can change your facial features. Just like a song maukatere is about something fun and good so we smile but some other songs are sad so you can’t smile.

The maori leader of ngati porau was the inventor of kapa haka his name was Hinare Teowai. He isn’t just an inventor he makes people so happy doing the things they love and we really enjoy. He invented something not just to embrace your culture but also have fun go against other tribes to see who’s the best!

In kapa haka we do something called a chant and its like really fast singing but its kinda just like talking because you done have to make your voice sound as good as singing.I really enjoy it because the words are hard to pronounce and its kinda like a tongue twister because there are a lot of words that sound the same but the first letter is different like kai, mai, and tai and there all close together because you are saying it really fast.

In conclusion kapa haka is very good past time because you can enter a competition, enjoy singing, dancing and having fun with your friends. It teaches you good discipline which can help you in other areas of your life.
