Kia ora, this week my reading group has been reading a book called The Great Rat-Catching Competition.
It is about an island beneath the South Island called Rakiura. They were dealing with a pest problem, so a school called Halfmoon Bay decided to hold a Rat-catching competition to get rid of the rats.
The school was planning for a predator-free 2050 because pests were eating populations of animals like Tui and Kiwi chicks, bats, and other native species. The person who won is called Bella. She had won the competition for the most rats caught. She had caught 65 rats more than a lot of people caught put together in numbers. We had to make a certificate for anything, but we just had to make it ourselves.
