This week, our class worked on a really fun and creative project: building a space lander. Unfortunately, I wasn’t there when everyone made theirs, so I had to learn about the activity afterward. Even though I missed it, hearing my classmates talk about it helped me imagine what it must have been like, and honestly, it sounded pretty exciting.
The goal of the project was to design a small space lander that could protect a passenger during landing. Most groups used a marshmallow, a small toy, or another light object as the astronaut. The challenge was to create something sturdy enough to land safely, but light enough to float down gently. Everyone got to choose from materials like paper, cups, straws, tape, and cotton balls. My classmates told me they spent a lot of time experimenting with different shapes and designs, trying to figure out what would keep the passenger from falling out or crashing too hard.
What I liked most was hearing how they tested their landers. They dropped them from a certain height and watched to see if they would land upright or tip over. Some landers bounced, some spun in the air, and some made surprisingly smooth landings. A few didn’t work at first, but people fixed their designs and tried again. It sounded like there was a lot of teamwork, laughter, and problem-solving.
