Our First Library Session of the Year 
We were excited to begin the year with our very first library session! The learners walked in with curious minds and left with new knowledge about books, how libraries work, and how to care for shared resources.
Exploring Our Inquiry Topic – All About Me
This term, our inquiry focus is “All About Me”. During our session, learners were mainly exposed to a wonderful range of inquiry topic books connected to this theme. These engaging and informative books were specially borrowed from the National Library of New Zealand to support our classroom learning.
The learners spent quality time browsing, reading, and discussing the books. They explored topics about identity, families, feelings, culture, and what makes each of us unique. It was heartwarming to see them making connections between the texts and their own lives.
Learning About the Parts of a Book
After exploring the inquiry books, we shifted our focus to understanding the structure of a book. Learners were introduced to:

The spine – We learned that the spine holds the pages together and displays the book’s title. This is what we see when books are placed on the shelf.

The contents page – Students discovered how the contents page helps readers find specific information quickly and easily.
This foundational knowledge is essential, as it builds confidence and independence in young readers.
Caring for Our Library
An important part of the session was learning how to return books correctly. Learners were shown how to carefully place books back on the shelf with the spine facing outward. We discussed the reason behind this — when the spine is visible, other users can easily read the title and locate the book they need.
Understanding the why behind these routines helps learners appreciate shared spaces and take responsibility for them.
A Great Start to the Year
Overall, the educational session was informative, engaging, and meaningful. Our learners not only deepened their understanding of our inquiry topic but also gained valuable library skills that will support them throughout the year.
