Hey everyone, Welcome back to my blog and this term I have done 5 experiments and will be telling you about how they work and what happens and I will also be telling you all about my favourite one out of the five and what My Hypothesis was, Conclusion, etc.
Here are the 5 experiments I have done and I will also be describing them:
1.Conduction:Conduction is when the transfer of the heat or electricity directly through a substance. For this experiment we(and when I mean “we” I mean me and my group) used a metal rod and used Petroleum jelly to stick thumb tacks on the rod and then we connected it to the retort stand. After that we set up the budsen burner and turn on the gas the lit it, then we timed how long it took for the thumb tacks to fall, the shortest lasting one was 0.12 seconds and the longest lasting one was 57 seconds.
2.Convection:Convection is a method of heat transfer where thermal energy moves through bulk movement of fluids. For this experiment we used the budsen burner and we filled a beaker half way with water and we ask our teacher to put some potassium in the water and then we turned on the gas and lit the budsen burner and what I observed is that the water turned purple from the potassium and the water started to boil as big bubbles started to appear and steam started to come out of the top.
3.Contraction:Construction is the study of materials decreasing in size, volume, or length, generally due to cooling. For this experiment we got out the budsen burner and we also got out the tripod and we put the gauze plate on top of the tripod so then we can set up an aluminium sprite can that has a little bit of water and we used tongs to move the can off the top of the budsen burner and move it into the container filled with water to see what will happen.
4.Diffusion:Particles move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. For this experiment we used a petri dish hot and cold water, we also used tweezers to put potassium in both hot and cold water and see what one would expand and get larger faster. The cold water took longer to expand due to being more dense unlike the hot water which was less dense so it was faster for the potassium to spread.
5.Expansion:Expansion is the action of something becoming larger. For this experiment we used the budsen burner and got a ball and a hoop and the goal of this was for the ball to expand so it couldn’t fit through the hoop. While the budsen burner is on one of us had to hold the ball over the flame and the others set up the retort stand and the hoop. The ball had to stay over the flame for at least 1-2 minutes and once the time was up we tried to put the ball through the hood but since the heat made the ball expand it wouldn’t fit.

Now I will be tell you about Contraction which was my favourite out of all of the other experiments.
My aim in this experiment was to observe what happens when you put an aluminium sprite can filled with boiling water in cold water. My hypothesis was that the boiling water in the can will cool down instantly when placed into the cold water. The equipment me and my group used was a pair of tongs, Budsen Burner, Sprite can, Tripod and gaze plate to put the can on top. The method we used was…
- Set up the budsen burner and the gauze and stand so the can can sit on top.
- Fill just the very bottom of the sprite can at least just below the small yellow writing on the bottom.
- Heat the water in the can until you see steam coming out of the top.
- Grab the tongs and pick up the can.
- bring over to a bucket of cold water and tip it upside down as you put it into the cold water.
During the experiment I observed that the water in the can started to boil and steam started coming out of the top and when you put it in cold water it crushed like it got squished. As my Hypothesis was that the boil water will cool down almost instantly was right but it was also crushed so it wasn’t 100% right I was more like 80% right. This was right because when you put the can in the water it cools down yes but it contracts because of the quick temperature change making the can look squished. Particles are little things that float in the air which is call gas or air but it can also be a liquid like water, it could even be a solid such as a table or a chair. The particles we saw change slightly was the liquid turning into gas as the water started to evaporate and start boiling, steam started coming out the top making gas as this is that the particles from the liquid start to spread out more and start to float. I concluded that in this experiment the can squished as the water went from hot to cold. As the temperature changes quickly it makes a different reaction like contracting or just being squished, another example of contracting is that when metal is pulled towards a magnet. A few things In this experiment I could do better next time is try to not be as scared and back away instead I should keep a good enough distance and participate more.
Basically when I did the experiment with my group the exact things I saw was the steam slowly coming out of the can as the water started to boil. The Particles that the was in the liquid as it started to heat up the energy in the particles started getting higher and higher as they started to separate and started to become gas also known as steam its starts to come out of the top. To cut down errors in my experiments I could repeat the experiment several times and take and average of my results and smooth out any random flukes. I also need to use proper equipment and keep all my variables under tight control so the data stays consistent.
