Hello, my name is Caiden and I will be talking about all the stuff I learnt for the pass few weeks in science, there are 5 of these experiments that we learnt are Conduction, where one particle touches another by vibrating and transfers some energy to it making it vibrate too. Convection, when a liquid is heated it goes up and the cooler liquid or less dense liquid flows down creating a cycle. Diffusion, this is a phenomenon that happens when the natural movement of particles move from an area with high concentration to area with low concentration distributing the particles evenly around. Expansion, When a particle is heated it moves faster rather than standing in one place which causes the solid to expand making it bigger than the original. from this experiments I learnt that particles actually distribute the heat rather than having to manually heat every single particle and expansion isn’t a man made thing and same goes for contraction, and I also thought that diffusion was just random that the liquid moves around, and finally I thought that nothing happens when you heat a liquid but a phenomenon called convection occurs when you heat liquid.
Favourite Experiment:
Contraction, when this happens the particles lose energy or get cooled causing it to lose energy and contract making it smaller than the original size.
The aim of this experiment:
During this type of experiment the aim was to see the can filled with water, contract when it loses energy
My Hypothesis:
My hypothesis was that during the experiment when the can was heated up it would expand and grow bigger and when we would place it in water it would shrink back down slowly.
Equipment:
We need a Bunsen Burner, a tripod, a heat mat, a can filled with water, tongs, and a big place holder for the cold water
Method:
- Set up the Bunsen Burner with the knowledge we learnt
- Turn on the Bunsen Burner with a match and put tripod over the Bunsen Burner
- Fill the can with water and put it on top of the tripod to heat it
- When it begins to steam use the tongs and slowly bring the can over the placeholder of the water
- Immediately put the can upside down and into the water without spilling the water inside the can
After the experiment we discussed what we noticed and the only thing we/I noticed was that the water took longer to heat than the others during this experiment, so I thought it was because of room temperature.
Results:
The results were that the can immediately compressed and shrunk into a disc.
Conclusion:
My hypothesis was “during the experiment when the can was heated up it would expand and grow bigger and when we would place it in water it would shrink back down slowly.”
My hypothesis was kinda right and wrong. The reason why my hypothesis was wrong and right at the same time was because I concluded that the can would shrink not quickly compress into a disc.
In terms of particles:
My hypothesis thought that the particles would only briefly slow down when placed into the water, but instead what happened was the particles immediately froze upon contact of the cold water. This happened because when it touched the cold water the particles were cooled and the kinetic energy was removed causing it to slow down rapidly and the particles slowed down so quick that it turned into a disc.
I now conclude that my hypothesis was wrong cause of what I thought would’ve happened. And once again, rather than slowing down to a smaller version of the original it just compressed to a flat disc.
What I could’ve done to make it better:
In this experiment I could’ve sped up the process that I was working at during the experiment, also I could’ve added a timer to check how long it took to start boiling the water so when I or if I redo this experiment I can make it more precise than the last time.
Observation:
During this experiment I didn’t really observed anything unusual from the experiment itself.
Errors:
During this experiment I couldn’t remember much rather I think the temperature was higher than room temp, so I think that’s one of the errors. That’s the only error I could possibly remember during this experiment from a few weeks ago.
That’s all thanks for reading and see you in the next blog.
