Diffusion:
For Diffusion, we did the potassium permanganate in water experiment
Definition:
Particles move from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.
Equipment needed for the experiment:
- Two Beakers or Petri Dishes.
- Potassium Permanganate.
- Tweezers.
- Safety Glasses.
- Cold Water.
- Hot Water.
Method:
- Put on Safety Gear.
- Fill Your First Beaker.
- Get a Timer Ready.
- Then, Put Your Potassium Permanganate In The Beaker and Time It Until It Stops.
- Repeat Steps With Hot Water.
Results:
Cold Water:
3minute 24seconds
Hot Water:
1minute 12seconds
Contraction:
For Contraction, we did the imploding can experiment.
Definition:
Contraction is when thermal energy (heat energy) is removed, and the particles compact together.
Equipment needed for the experiment:
- A Heat Mat.
- A Hot Plate.
- An Aluminium Can.
- An Ice Cream Container Filled With Water.
- A Pair of Scissor Tongs.
- Water.
Method:
- Place the heat mat on the bench.
- Place the hot plate on the heat mat.
- Fill the ice cream container with water and place it near the hot plate.
- Fill the can ¼ with water and set aside.
- Turn on the hot plate and place the can on the hot plate.
- Wait until steam is flowing out of the top of the can, and wait around thirty seconds longer.
- Grab the can with the scissor tongs and quickly flip it into the ice cream container.
Results:
I observed that as we put the can in the ice cream container filled with water, it immediately imploded (Compacted Together).
Conduction:
For Conduction, we did the conductors and insulators experiment
Definition:
Conduction is the process by which heat is directly transferred through the material of a substance when there is a difference in temperature between regions without moving the material.
Equipment needed for the experiment:
- 2 Ice Cubes.
- Metal Tray.
- Plastic Lid.
Method:
- Place metal and plastic trays next to each other.
- Bring up two stopwatches (Don’t start them yet).
- Place ice in the trays and start the stopwatch.
- When one of the ice cubes finishes melting, stop one of the stopwatches.
- Wait until the other ice cube melts and stop the second stopwatch.
Results:

Convection:
For Convection, we did the experiment
Definition:
Convection is when areas of liquid or gases with more thermal energy rise, while areas with less thermal energy fall.
Equipment needed for the experiment:
The equipment we used was:
- Beaker.
- Bunsen Burner.
- Matches.
- Potassium Permanganate.
Method:
- Set up your tripod and gauze mat.
- Fill The Beaker With Water.
- Place The Beaker On The Tripod.
- Place Potassium Permanganate In The Beaker.
- Light A Bunsen Burner and Place It Under The Tripod.
Results:
When the Bunsen Burner was placed under the beaker, the potassium permanganate started to rise.
As the Potassium Permanganate reached the top, the particles started to cool down.
Then it started to fall to the bottom.
Once it reached the bottom, the process started all over again.
Favourite Experiment:
My favourite experiment was the imploding can experiment (Contraction).
For the contraction, we did the imploding can experiment.
