Hello, Welcome to my blog! Pictures are at the bottom of the blog.
This blog is about alleles, this is shown by us making zombies.
Aim: To make a zombie based on the parent’s genetics involving punnet squares.
In Science we have been learning about genetics, to help us understand genetics we used punnet squares.
Method:
- We chose random genotypes from a premade handout.
- We then put the mother’s genotype and the father’s genotype into a punnet square and worked out the probability of the offspring.
- From there we worked out whether or not the trait was dominant or recessive.
- Then we made a zombie based on the punnet squares.
Picking Parent Alleles:
What were the different alleles? The different alleles were:
Skin: Green or Purple, Green was dominant.
Hair: Curly and Messy or Straight, Curly and messy was dominant.
Limb count: 4 arms & 2 legs or 4 legs and 2 arms, 4 arms and 2 legs were dominant.
Clothing: Ragged or Holey, Ragged was dominant.
Teeth: Pointy and sharp or Rabbit, Pointy and sharp were dominant.
Weapon: Stake or bat, Stake was dominant.
How did you decide what traits your zombie had? We selected two options for each category, for example the hair options were straight or curly and messy. The parent alleles led to curly and messy.
Definitions (Down below)
Gene: A heredity unit which travels from parent to offspring.
Allele: A form of gene found at a specific location on the chromosome.
Genotype: The genetic rule of a single organism.
Phenotype: A set of noticeable traits of an organism.
How do you fill out punnet squares? To fill out punnet squares you follow the gene to the next square, the larger letter in front is always going to dominate over the smaller letter.
What’s the point? The point is so you know what characteristics the offspring will have.
Did it work? It worked well and my end result was a pretty cool looking zombie!
Would you do anything differently? I would add some crazy options so my zombie wouod look crazy and cool!
That’s this blog, thank you for reading!
