My waka building reflection – Social studies

Hello and welcome back to another blog post and today in P5 we went in R9 to test out our waka’s that we have been building in Social Studies for the past 2 weeks. Today we got to test out if our waka’s would float or not. We used a sink and filled it up with water. We had a few tests to see how strong it will float: we start by placing it in the water, if it floats then you blow on it, and the final test is to move the water to create small waves and the bigger waves to make it feel more realistic to the oceans characteristics.

Did it float?

Now the real question is, will it float?

Once I put it my boat in the water, the front started to tilt forwards but it still stayed afloat. Then I tried to push some small waves towards it and it ended up tilting to the side and half of it was in the water.

What went well?

I feel like the boat that was made of popsicle sticks and the sail went well. The water held the weight of it because it wasn’t too heavy.

What didn’t go well?

I feel like the bottles on my boat didn’t go as planned because they weren’t the right way up. If I flipped them the other way around it could have worked a bit better.

What would I change next time?

I would probably try a different structure of boat and give it some more sails and flip the bottles up the other way and see if that could make a different. The reason I would flip the bottles the other way around because the other boats that had them a different way as me floated successfully.
