Ohaeawai’s ecosystem

On the 1st of May my whole class, Team Moana, went down to Ohaeawai’s water ecosystem (Pekapeka Awa) which is one of the many streams by Taiamai Rock which is a very sacred place to our school and Ohaeawai in general. The first thing we did is get in pre made groups and in our groups we all got a bag each filled with

equipment that we would need while down there. When we got there, we had to grab our nets from our bags and each group had one little net  and one big net that Whaea Rosie brought. She taught us very sl

ow and carefully, saying to swish the big net a couple of times to try and catch something to put in the groups’ buckets. But of course, at the end we would let everything we caught free. For the little nets it was the same but you had to be a little closer to the water. With the big net, I ended up catching a fresh water crayfish and a common bully fish and it was the best! Then we had to walk back to school and for the rest of the day we continued doing work. Before we left the awa, each group got a sample of the water and will be testing the water later on. I loved go down to investigate this ecosystem. It was so fun!
