Yesterday in science, we were doing Biology and learning about hearts! For this experiment, we used a sheep heart and we dissected it.
What equipment did we use? – For this experiment we used a seeker, scissors, tweezers, aluminium tray, newspaper, gloves, safety glasses and a sheep’s heart.
What steps did we take during this Dissection? – We grabbed our seeker, scissors and tweezers. Taking an aluminium tray along with new paper, gloves and our safety glasses. We made sure our stuff were on before putting the sheep’s heart onto the tray with newspaper. We dissected the sheep’s heart, recording and making observations about what we saw.
What parts of the heart did we see during each step? – When we cut open the heart, we cut it through the middle of the heart and immediately saw the right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle and the left ventricle, along with the epicardium. We cut deeper into the heart and saw the chordae tendineae, papillary muscles, tricuspid valve and the bicuspid valve.

Four parts of the heart and describe their functions –
- Right Atrium – Takes oxygen-depleted blood from the body (mainly the veins) and pumps it up right into the right ventricle.
- Right Ventricle – Obtains blood from the right Atrium and pumps it through the pulmonary artery to the lungs to receive oxygen.
- Left Atrium – Gains the oxygen-rich blood straight from your lungs and pumps it into the left ventricle.
- Left Ventricle – The strongest chamber receives the oxygen-rich blood from the left Atrium and pumps it through the aorta and towards the rest of the body.
