Cow eye dissection Term 2 week 5 science

Today, May 21st of 2026, the body part we dissected was the eye, specifically a cow’s eye.
The tools we used were Surgical scissors (a scalpel used only by the teacher), tweezers, newspaper, and a dissecting tray.
The steps:
1. Take a cow eye from the teacher’s table
2. Get surgical scissors and tweezers from the tray
3. Cut out the meaty part that is attached to the eye except the optic nerve
4. Cut the eye open by letting our teacher make the incision cut and to cut around the eye (I didn’t do this since I put it inside out)
5. Take the lens out with the vitreous humour  attached to it from the eyeball
6. Pluck out the iris from the eyeball using the tweezers
7. Use gentle force and separate the lens from the vitreous humour.
8. Some of us used the lens and looked through it and it actually magnified the letters in the news paper
9. We looked at the colourful part that only the cows have, and the part is called “Tapetum”
That’s all.

Parts of the eye:
Retina – Detects light and helps form images that are sent to the brain.
Lens – Focuses light onto the retina so you can see clearly.
Optic nerve – Send the electric signals the eye gets to the brain to “decode” it, allowing you to see.
Pupil – The opening in the center of the eye that lets light in.
Iris – Controls the size of the pupil to regulate how much light enters the eye.
Cornea – The clear front layer of the eye that protects it and helps bend light.
Sclera – The tough white outer layer of the eye that protects and helps keep its shape.
Vitreous humour – The clear jelly substance inside the eye that helps it keep its shape.
