In order to be a scientist you need to question, look carefully, hypothesize, collect information and create an action plan. Finally, you need to act on your plan.
Three years ago Waitohu students found that the Waitohu awa was too warm so Greater Wellington council gave us two hundred trees and plants for us to plant.
On Tuesday I moved the rocks back from the trunk of the plants because the tree has grown over the last couple of years so they needed space.
My scientific mind asked the question,’’Where are the plants that our school planted?’’ Using my eyes I searched the field carefully.
When we found the plants we took the weeds out so they weren’t strangling the tree. We moved the rocks back because the tree has grown over the last few years so they could get more space so the weeds couldn’t strangle the trees as much.
I was showing that I was a scientist because I was looking carefully, questioning, hypothesising and collecting information.
My plan was to be a Kaitiaki to the plants. I am looking forward to going back later in the year to see how much progress they have made.
