Food Testing Experiment

This week we have been doing experiments about the stuff in the food we eat.

Aim:

To see what are in the foods we eat like Starch, Glucose, Protein, and Fat.

Equipment:

  • One Beaker.
  • Two Test Tubes.
  • One Spatula.
  • Pipette.
  • News Paper (For the Fats test).

Foods:

  • Biscuits.
  • Bread.
  • Orange Juice.
  • Egg.

Method:

Glucose:

  1. Place a 250 mL beaker with 150 mL of water on a hot plate with a heat mat to the side. Turn the hot plate to high and let your water heat while you prepare your samples.
  2. Take two test tubes, put 1 cm of water in one, and 1 cm of a glucose solution in the other.
  3. Add a few drops of Benedict solution to each test tube (enough to make the liquids pale blue).
  4. Place both test tubes in the beaker of water on your hot plate and leave for 3-5 minutes (until you see a change occur).

Protein:

  1. Take two test tubes, put 1 cm of water in one, and 1 cm of milk (a liquid that contains protein) in the other.
  2. Add 1 mL of dilute sodium hydroxide solution and mix.
  3. Add one or two drops only of 5% copper sulfate solution. If you add too much copper sulfate the test won’t work. Shake the test tube to mix the solutions.

Fat:

  1. Take a small piece of your food (about the size of a rice grain), put it on a piece of newspaper. Fold the paper over so that it covers the food, and squash the cheese between the layers of paper with your fingers.
  2. Open out the paper and hold it up to the light. Circle the words below that describe the mark made by the fat in the food.

Starch:

  1. Take two test tubes, put 1 cm of water in one, and 1 cm of starch solution in the other.
  2. Add 2–3 drops of iodine solution to each test tube.
