Kai and Matariki – Blog post

Hey bloggers,

The traditional food people eat on Matariki include kumara (sweet potato), chicken, tuna, and seafood (kaimoana) like mussels and fish. The foods are cooked in a hangi which is a cooking method where you cook underground.

Why these foods?

They eat these foods to say a big “thank you” for nature feeding them. Each food links to a star that protects a different part of the world. When the food is hot, the steam takes the thank you’s up to the stars.

Seasonal harvesting

Matariki marks the end of the Māori harvest and the start of winter. It is a time when people celebrate and prepare for the future.

Sustainability

Matariki sustainability is honouring the Māori New Year by protecting, restoring and living in harmony with the natural environment.

Local foods

Matariki local food means eating seasonal food that honours the environment. It is about having a meal with family and friends.

Bye!
