The Tawhirimatea Story tells how there was no space between Rangi and Papa. This means there was no space between the earth and the sky. The children of Rangi and Papa lived between them. They were cramped and they hated it. The brothers fought over the space.
They decided they wanted to push their parents apart so they could be free. However Tawhirimatea didn’t agree. Tane Mahuta pushed their parents apart and Papa felt sad and her tears rained down filling the oceans.
