Auckland City Abstract Painting
Last Friday, we made an Auckland City Painting with methods from our teacher. Here is a fact for you: Did you know we made a painting without ever using a paintbrush?! We actually used an old or expired credit card to make it! If you are curious about how we made it or want to make a painting using the same methods we used, then follow this step by step instruction on how to make it. Have fun!
Things you need to make:
Credit card ( Or just use any card. Just make sure it’s a bit flexible )
Canvas
Vivid or black marker
Paint ( Use the colors that are in your reference photo )
Reference ( Search up ‘Auckland city painting’, go to images, and pick a painting you like.
Step 1: Make the background
- Draw a line where you want the sea level to be, use a ruler to make the line straight.
- Pick two colors you want to be as your sky ( e.g: red and yellow ) and dab them onto your card.
- Put the card on your canvas and start filling the sky. Stop when you get close to the line. If your card ran out of paint, use the same colors on your canvas. If you used red and yellow for a sunset look, it makes the color orange while you fill it in
- For the water, use the same method you did. If you want a different shade of blue, use a bit of white or black. But, you can just use the same color as you did for the sky, as it reflects.
Step 2: Paint the buildings
- Wash your card and dab black paint on your card.
- Start making your buildings by swaying the card vertically. Choose any size for your buildings.
- After that, wash your card again and dab white paint on it. Stamp the card on the top of the buildings to make a line. To make the windows, stamp the card vertically from top to bottom. And do the same thing with the sides, but horizontally. Wash the card, then put yellow lines between the white lines to make light.
- To make the shadows for the buildings, use black paint and sway the card vertically on the water. If the building is short, make the shadows short, if it’s long, also make the shadows long. I recommend you to also use yellow paint as well and other colors for the ‘abstract’ vibe.
Step 3: Create the Skytower
- Draw two lines using your vivid/black marker, then make an oval on top of the 2 lines. Draw a square on top of the oval, then draw a vertical line on top of the square, then start drawing lines inside the shapes.
