Introduction
Kia Ora everyone, for science this term our topic is Physics and we are learning about power stations. For these past few days we’ve been making our own power stations made out of lots of different pieces of equipment like cardboard and paper. For our group we agreed on making a wind turbine, firstly we had to make a plan about it and draw it out and figure out how werw gonna make it. We decided to make our wind turbine out of these materials including:
Equipment:
- Paper
- Cardboard
- BBQ sticks
- Foam
- Straws
Does your model use hydroelectric power, geothermal power, wind power, or solar power to produce electricity?
Yes, our model of our wind turbine uses wind power for it to produce electricity because its a WIND turbine.
Is this source of energy renewable? How do you know?
The source energy for wind turbines is renewable because the wind is a natural resource.
Explain how your power plant produces electrical energy.
- The blades of the wind turbine have an airfoil shape that helps lift and drag.
- The wind pushs the blades that creates pressure pushing the blades to rotate.
- The shafts in the middle of the turbine rotates as well because of the blades also rotating.
- The gear box increases the speed of the shaft so the generator can start operating.
- The shafts drive the generator to produce energy.
- The wires inside transport the electrical energy that the generator produced throught tower.
- A step up transformer form the outside of the tower increases the voltage of the electrical energy so it can be taken to the grid so it can be distributed to homes, businesses, and schools.
(shorter version)
- Kinetic energy (wind)
- Kinetic energy (blades)
- Kinetic energy (shaft)
- Electrical energy
