Pūrerehua

2. Describe what Māori pūrerehua are traditionally made out of and what they are used for.

Historically made from native wood, whale bone, or pounamu and swung by a flax cord, the Māori pūrerehua is a traditional Maori wind instrument used to summon rain, lure lizards, and carry spiritual messages to the gods and ancestors within its deep, butterfly-like vibrational sound.

3. Describe what the design on your pūrerehua relates to. It really doesn’t describe much but it’s something I made up with a friend, a stickman figure with peace signs.

4. Describe the sound made when spinning the pūrerehua fast and slow. When the pūrerehua is moving fast it makes this whistling or buzzing sound, as for slowly spinning it creates a softer low pitched vibration.

5. Explain why spinning the pūrerehua at different speeds changed the sound.Spinning the pūrerehua at different speeds changes the sound because it alters how fast the air vibrates.
