Health Death Dying and the Afterlife

1 Introduction

In Health we have been studying about Death Dying and the Afterlife We have learned about some different cultural beliefs and traditions Some of the things we have learned about are different funeral traditions beliefs about the afterlife how different cultures deal with death and ways people show respect when someone passes away

2 How can you take care of your hauora when you go through upsetting things such as death

I can take care of my hauora when something upsetting happens by talking to someone I trust spending time with family and friends getting enough sleep eating healthy food and giving myself time to process my feelings It is important to ask for help if I am struggling

3 What happens in your culture when someone passes away

My culture is Tongan When someone passes away in Tongan culture family and friends come together to support each other There is usually a funeral and people may wear respectful clothing Family members and the community come together to remember the person and show respect Food is also an important part of bringing people together during this time

4 What is one thing that you learned about someone elses culture when a person passes away

A culture that I learned about was Victorian culture When a person passed away there were many traditions and rules that people followed Families would often wear black clothing to show that they were mourning They could also cover mirrors and close curtains in the house These traditions were a way of showing respect for the person who had died

5 How were you respectful to others during this unit

I was respectful when listening to other peoples ideas and cultural beliefs I understood that everyone can have different traditions and beliefs about death and the afterlife I did not make fun of or judge other peoples cultures because these topics can be very important and personal to people

My chosen topic is Victorian death traditions

7 What is your investigation about

I have chosen to investigate Victorian death traditions and the different ways people showed respect and remembered someone after they passed away

8 What did you learn about your topic

I learned that Victorian people had many traditions when someone died

I learned that wearing black clothing was a common way of showing that someone was mourning

I also learned that families used different traditions in their homes such as covering mirrors and closing curtains because of beliefs about death and mourning
