Today we have been creating some cultural calendar art.
I have created a Tiki on a background of the Maori flag
A Tiki is a Maori carving, varying in size from a necklace pendant to a life-size human carving. “Tiki” most commonly refers to “Hei Tiki” which is specifically a wood or greenstone necklace pendant. Tiki are often used to decorate Marae (meeting houses) and Pā (fortified villages and strongholds), specifically Koruru and Tekoteko. Koruru is just the facial carving decorating the sides of the Marae, while Tekoteko are the full size ones that guard the entrance to the Pā and stand on the peak of the Marae.
The background is a Tino Rangatiratanga flag, the official flag of Maori, Designed in 1989, first unveiled on Waitangi day in 1990, and only officially selected as the official Maori flag in 2009.
