This term, my class has been focusing on poetry; and these last few weeks we’ve been learning about idioms.
Idioms are a kind of figurative language – well known sayings that don’t actually mean what they say. For example, It’s raining cats and dogs and A piece of cake!. We learned about the literal meanings and the figurative meanings, as well as the history of each saying. Some of them were really interesting! Breaking the ice (to make someone feel more comfortable) comes from when smaller ships used to literally break the ice around large ships to help them get out. It’s raining cats and dogs actually refers to, a long time ago, when storms blew stray animals around. Darker than it sounded, right?
Anyway, we all had to pick one idiom that we found interesting and explain it on a slide.
I chose Once in a blue moon, as you can see.
I think it’s really interesting to learn the historical origins of these common sayings.
