Hello bloggers the text we were reading about this week was life in Aotearoa part 2 we readied about arriving and adapting it talked about how kiwis lost their flying ability and it’s closest relative the elephant bird now extinct. Next page was finding a niche it explains of species having to disperse when gondwana split up and found new environments and they find new ways to adapt and survive to the environment. it ha 3 paragraphs Moa, the giant Weta, The mamaku. Moa an now extinct giant bird that can’t fly and it did not have much predators so it overgrow ed because it had plenty of food to eat and was the size of a deer.
Weta NZ giant insect’s they evolved enough to have a niche very similar to the mice it is nocturnal and eats both plants and insects, has very few predators and could eat a lot in that time period.
The mamaku is another unique feature of our forests, the tree have evolved to fill a niche similar to angiosperm trees in other parts of the world.
