On Friday, August 14th, Jonah the inflatable humpback whale came to NBC. Each class spent about 45 minutes in the hall learning about humpback whales, their outer body parts, and how those parts help them. Then after listening to the instructor, we all finally got to go inside Jonah and see his internal body parts.
But since we couldn’t all fit inside of Jonah at the same time, we were split into two different groups. One group went inside to learn about the internal body parts, while the other group did a humpback whale word search and coloured in a picture.
ABOUT JONAH
Jonah was much bigger than I expected. Not only was he as tall as the hall he was as wide as the hall too. Taking up most of the space. If you didn’t know, Jonah is a 12 metre-long, life-sized inflatable humpback whale used by project jonah to teach children and communities about marine conservation across New Zealand. Lastly did you know in New Zealand there are only 3 life-sized inflatable humpback whales to be created and Jonah is one of them.
It was really cool, at first when I heard we were allowed to go inside I thought everyone was joking but when I went in myself I was shocked and realised how lucky I was. But I did imagine that there would be more pictures of the whales internal body parts. As in labels pointing towards what’s what and explaining what they help and do for the whale and more dark realistic colours on the inside than there was. Otherwise I had both a great time and experience.
