Upstairs in RM 10, us tamariki have been learning about algebraic questions. Learning that when you are solving big math equations fast, simplifying a word down can save so much time! For example, you have one more step to complete your equation. You worked out every step and now you have to figure out this last bit… 54000071 x 3! WOW you think to yourself, I don’t have enough space to write that all out. Instead, Im going to give that number a letter(a). So the simplified equation now becomes, a x 3. It still works out to have the same answer, just saves space.
Our Teacher gave us a task to explain how to work out x + 9 = 21 on camera. For this activity, I used an app called Screen cast to record my problem solving. I like working out algebra because its similar to riddles. An easy Way I like to work it out is writing out the question, for example, x + 7 = 42. To figure out what x equals, you need to start from right to left when working out. So it would look more like this 42 = 7 + x, now we need to change the = & + to = & -.
42 – 7 = 35, so your answer would be 35. To have a look at this visually, here’s my video. I hope You have learned something new.
