Kia ora koutou katoa, This term we are learning about climate change in Science.
Here is a blog post about what we have learnt so far this term.
What is climate change?
climate change is the long-term change {that we can measure} in climate. The climate is always changing but the changes have been slow in the past but now it’s speeding up, and this change is moving faster than it has at any time in human history.
What is causing climate change?
One is the greenhouse effect, It starts off by the Earth’s surroundings called the atmosphere, the atmosphere is made of gases that trap the sun’s heat- this is a natural greenhouse effect. This process makes Earth much warmer than it would be without an atmosphere. Some gases are produced by humans {like carbon dioxide} can make their way into Earth’s atmosphere, When they get into the atmosphere, they supercharge Earth’s natural greenhouse effect by trapping heat. This results in an enhanced greenhouse effect. Some solar radiation is reflected by the Earth’s and the atmosphere. Most radiation is absorbed by the Earth’s surface and warms it. Some of the infrared radiation passes through the atmosphere. Some are absorbed and re-emitted in all directions by the greenhouse gas molecules.
Why do students throughout Aotearoa and globally want to go on strike from school and protest?
Students throughout Aotearoa and globally want to go on strike because tens of thousands of young akonga marched towns and cities throughout Aotearoa are really concern for the future of the planet, they joined a global campaign known as School Strike Climate 4 Change Action. It began in Sweden in August 2018 when 15-year old Greta Thunberg missed the school protest outside of the Swedish Parliament holding a sign the read ‘Skolstrejk for klimatet'{school strike for the climate}’ Since then it has grown into a worldwide movement, where youth are at the forefront of demanding governments protect the future of the environment they will inherit. New Zealand go on climate strike to demand urgent government action on climate change, protect their future and ensure a safe and stable environment.
