What do pigs look like: a short round body that can be pink or brown or black or maybe spotted with a barrel. for a body and clover hooves and short snout and a short tail that’s curly and to cool down they roll around in the mud and they  eat the food scraps you don’t. eat did you know pigs can sweat. That’s cool right. They can communicate in twenty different noises and pigs are actually smart they may Sometimes seem dumb and a pigs smell is up to two thousand times more sensitive  than  a human

What do pigs eat and drink pigs are omnivores omnivore means they eat stuff like meat and grains and veggies they eat apples without seeds and cucumbers also .squash  with grains like corn wheat and barley for what they drink is fresh water including milk.

The purpose for a pig being on a farm is because it is for food sources like bacon, pork and  pork chops  and they eat leftover food . They dig the ground up and remove rocks. Also they make the soil softer and pigs actually make medicine.

Where do pigs live some pigs live in the forest and most farm pigs live in paddocks some might lay or hay.

Animal description writing

Kia ora

At school we have been having an agricultural week, and for writing we did an animal description . I did a turkey.  We had to have what a turkey looks like, where turkeys live, what they eat and their purpose on the farm. I googled facts I needed to know, but we had to put the facts into our own words. I worked really hard on mine, it was tricky.

Turkey

What does a turkey look like?

A turkey is a big bird with bronze-green feathers. They can fly. Turkeys have bumpy heads and they have no feathers on their head or on their neck. Male turkeys are bigger than the females and have a red and blue head. They also have a hanging skin flap over their beak which is called a snood, as well as a bit of chest hair called a beard. Wild turkeys weigh about 9 kilograms but farm turkeys are usually heavier.

Where do turkeys live?

Turkeys live in North America, Central America, Mexico and Parts of Canada. They like forests with oak and maple trees. They are put into New Zealand for game hunting in the North Island. They fly up to tall tree branches to sleep and hide away from predators on the ground.

What do turkeys eat?

Turkeys are omnivores which means they eat meat and vegetables. The meat they eat is mainly bugs, like grasshoppers and beetles that give them protein for their eggs and turkey chicks. The plants they eat include clovers, new grass leaves, berries and wild grapes. They also eat seeds.

What is their purpose on the farm?

They are mainly raised for meat and eggs but are also used for things like pest control because they eat small rodents like mice. Turkeys have good poo, their manure has nutrients for the soil and gardens.

Extra  Fun Facts

  • Wild turkeys can fly up to 88 km h..
  • They have nearly 360 degree eyesight .
  • Their poo can tell us what gender they are, males have  “J” shaped poo and females have spiral poo.

Hope you liked it.

Poetry – Limericks

This term my class is learning about poetry,

and we’re all focusing on a different style every day. Today’s poem is a limerick!

A limerick is a short, often funny poem consisting of five lines with the pattern A-A-B-B-A. Two longer lines that rhyme with each other; then two short ones that share a different rhyme; then, finally, one longer one that rhymes with the first.

Most people wrote theirs using their own names, but I wanted to write mine about a character I’ve made up and drawn a lot, Joey Radio.
I like constantly expanding her world through drawings and writing. I had a lot of fun writing my limerick. Have you ever written one?

Native bird mosaics

Hello, last week we have been learning to find a local tonga and use colour to show they matter.

We have made mosaic native birds. We did the background with dye. Then we drew the bird in our reading book. Then we got the dyed  paper and draw the bird on the paper. Then we got the magazines and ripped off the page with the colours we needed. Then we ripped the colours we needed up to little pieces  and glued them on. Some of us added a branch, a rock or a leaf. I did a branch. For the branch I needed brown, so I found a page in the magazine that was brown. I did a Tui.

Have you ever done a mosaic art? Here is mine.

Mosaics on Native bird

Talofa. My class have been finding local Tonga and using colour to show they matter. This week we have been doing some native bird mosaics.

First we had to draw and colour a native bird  of our  choice. We did these in our reading books. Native birds are birds that only can be found in one country. We all did the native birds from New Zealand.

Then we had to dye the background using some green dye. We let it dry, then after it had finished drying we gently sketched the outline of our bird. We drew our bird from  our reading book on to the green dyed background. Finally  we ripped up pieces of magazine and we glued them inside the bird. If you were doing a Tui, you would have to incorporate the colours of the Tui.

I designed a Tui. The outline was really hard but I managed to do it. It was really hard because I had to find the right colours from the magazines that my teacher gave me. I loved doing these mosaics it was really cool to see what all the other kids had done. Everyone had done amazing. This art was so much fun! I think my Tui came out great and I incorporated all the rights colours into my art. I loved doing this. Have you ever done any mosaics before?

Do you like it? Have you done any art like this before?

Westamath in Reefton

Hello!

Westamath is a math competition that is held on the West Coast. It is for year 6 to 8 children who excel in mathematics. It has teams of four compete in 20 math questions.

This year I was lucky to make the team and travel to Reefton in my dad’s car with all of my team except one. My dad bought us lollies, Oreos and nut mix from New World.  Once we got there we had to wait for the year sevens to do their competition, then we had ours and the questions were HARD but we came fourth out of 21 teams and we were all pretty happy with that. On the way back we got free ice cream. I had soooo much fun doing westamath.

Bye Bye

Commonwealth Games at Grey main

On Thursday we did common wealth games all day.

The stuff that is in the Commonwealth games is basketball, weight lifting, javelin,  riper rugby, lawn bowls, netball, soccer, shotput,  shooting and gymnastics. In basketball we went around the cones then when you finished that you took shots, and the team with the most points wins. Then weight lifting you need to put your arms out and hold them there. Then lawn bowls in this you need to roll the ball and hit something. Then javelin you have a black big bin and you have a ball and you need to throw the ball in the bucket. In shotput you have a small bucket now and you have sand bags then shooting you have a nerf gun and a target. Gymnastics you have a trampoline and a mat and you land on the mat.

Commonwealth Games at GMS!

On Thursday at school we ran a mini commonwealth games. We each were in a Commonwealth country. I was in the country Scotland.

For Scotland we had to wear a blue tutu, a white shirt but the boys could wear blue shorts. One of the events we did was javelin but it was modified. You had to line up behind a yellow line, then you had to shoot balls into a trash bucket that was a few meters away. There was a whole lot of other events, but they were modified too. Like gymnastics we just had to run on to this trampoline and jump of  and do some sort of trick. We didn’t do all the Commonwealth events. For each event you would earn points. If you lost a game against the other country  then you would get five points, if you won the game you would get ten points, and if it was a draw then each team would get seven points. The Commonwealth Games where so much fun!

Do you like watching the Commonwealth Games? Have you ever had some Commonwealth events at your school?
