Learning words from Bungy Jumping

The Highlight: “Today in reading, we read about A.J. Hackett and bungy jumping. Here is my Word Explorer slide deck!”

Vocabulary Focus: “One new word I learned today was grandstander. It means someone who shows off to get attention and applause. In the story, the author used it to show A.J Hackett as a grandstander because he jumped off the Eiffel tower.”

Idiom Spotlight: “My favourite idiom in this text was leap of faith. This doesn’t actually mean leaping with faith, it means you’re trusting the actual bungy cord and its going to hold you.

Author’s Tone Reflection: “I think the author thinks A.J. Hackett is crazy because they used words like he jumped off the Eiffel Tower knowing he was going to be arrested.

SMART being safe online

Kia ora! This week for cyber smart we have been doing SMART being safe online. We first went on adobe express. We created a poster with the letters S M A R T down the side. It was kind of like an acrostic poem. On our class site in the cyber smart folder was a slide showing what SMART stood for.  Wed had to read it then go on adobe and put those words into our own.  for me the biggest challenge was changing the background.

This is my poster on SMART hope you like it! Thanks for reading!

Spill the beans

This term we are learning about “idioms”, we picked one that we want to write about.

Spill the beans means to tell a secret when you are not supposed to and  many years ago in Ancient Greece, people didn’t use paper ballots to vote for their leaders. Instead, they used coloured beans, people would drop their bean into a jar completely in secret. If someone accidentally knocked the jar over, all the beans would tumble out. The secret results were revealed way too early, which is exactly why we use the phrase today.

Sentence:

“They tried to keep the birthday party a secret, but Timmy spilled the beans.”

PIECE OF CAKE!!!🍰

This term we are doing idioms this is my one on a piece of cake.

Piece of cake

Figurative meaning:

Something that is easy

It came from the 19th century when people competed in a competition by walking in a circle elegantly and then they received a piece of cake.

My brother and I competed in a reading contest, it was a piece of cake, and I won by a landslide!

P.S. The story is fake I made it up🤫

Learning about Idioms

This term, my class has been focusing on poetry; and these last few weeks we’ve been learning about idioms.

Idioms are a kind of figurative language – well known sayings that don’t actually mean what they say. For example, It’s raining cats and dogs and  A piece of cake!. We learned about the literal meanings and the figurative meanings, as well as the history of each saying. Some of them were really interesting! Breaking the ice (to make someone feel more comfortable) comes from when smaller ships used to literally break the ice around large ships to help them get out. It’s raining cats and dogs actually refers to, a long time ago, when storms blew stray animals around. Darker than it sounded, right?

Anyway, we all had to pick one idiom that we found interesting and explain it on a slide.

I chose Once in a blue moon, as you can see.

I think it’s really interesting to learn the historical origins of these common sayings.

Thanks for reading

Quick Write ✏

Every week we make a different story about a picture. This week we wrote about a kid pilot. This is my favourite paragraph.

WHOOSH! Timmy zoomed through the sky at 650 miles per hour. Timmy was going so fast that the wind was blowing his blonde hair back. His small feet and hands reached for the accelerator. His skinny body with small jeans and a blue t-shirt were so bright they intimidated the birds. The helmet he had on was about ten sizes too big and was going to fall any second now, but he didn’t care because he was having so much fun. His big smile was brighter than the sun.

Quick write is one of my favourite subjects in school.

Quick write📝

Kia Ora, today I’m here to talk about our quick writes. Every week we are given a prompt to create a story over the week. Here is this weeks prompt.

Youngest Pilot

Write a narrative about a young child who is the youngest pilot to fly a plane. Where does the child go on their first flight, and what incredible sights do they see above the clouds?

Story Key:

  • Where &  Who: Introduce the characters and setting.
  •  😱 Uh-Oh! (Problem): Face an obstacle or challenge.
  • 🏁 The Finish: Resolve the conflict & wrap up the story.
  •  Fri: Read & Listen: Share and reflect on the story.

Here is my writing about this image.

As the big jet thruster lit up and blew out flames, Conor, a small boy with sea blue eyes, sandy blonde hair and a nice smile got in the cockpit and buckled himself up ready to fly. At ten years old, Conor had been invited to the Blue Angels jet stunt team. He looked up at the big blue jet with yellow pin stripes and on the side of the jet was written:Blue Angels . He loved the look of the jet. He put on his sleek blue and smooth yellow helmet over his head and buckled it up. He  closed the window hatch over himself. Then he slowly was pushed onto the runway by a small truck mover. He start moving closer and closer to the end of the runway. He pulled up on the steering remote connected to the steering system. In under 3 seconds Conor was up in the clouds doing loop de loops and 360 barrel rolls. Suddenly his thruster explodes and he catches fire! He also gets attacked by an enemy fleet of jets and getting chased in their brand new F-18 jets. Conor only has a F-14 falcon. The enemy fleet have better and faster jets than him. He dodges a few missiles and spitfires coming from the enemy’s  jets. He starts falling down to the sea because he had forgotten about the thruster that was on fire as he had travelled all the way out to the ocean. He quickly ejected himself out of the cockpit to escape his jet. But then he realised that he was still sixteen hundred feet above sea level. It would be a dangerous landing. Suddenly the enemy fleet disappeared into the clouds. He was now twelve hundred feet above the sea. He quickly remembered being taught how to use the parachute. At nine hundred feet above sea he had his parachute out and was slowly falling down to the water. He later hit the water and was struggling to keep his head above the water because of the baggy jet safety gear. 34 minutes later Conor saw a helicopter from his blue angels team. He swam and splashed so that the helicopter could see him. He was rescued and was sitting in the back of the helicopter. After 1 hour and 58 minutes they made it back to Florida to the blue angels team HQ. He got changed into new clothes and got into his other jet. Once again the big jet thrusters lit up and blew out flames and WHOOSHH! Conor was back in the air!

The end

I hope you like my writing!

This week at grey main we were working  on farming and we had to write  about our animal.

What is a donkey.

A donkey is a sturdy, four-legged farm animal in the horse family. It has long ears, small hooves, and makes a braying sound.

What do donkeys eat?

Donkeys eat scraps. Like pigs they eat mostly everything, but donkeys eat hay, grass and fruit like apples, strawberries, grapes, and blue berries.

They like to drink every type  of water like mucky water or clean water  but not fizzy.

Where do donkeys live?

Donkeys live at a barn or at a safe caring person’s farm.

Facts  about donkeys?

1: Donkeys have 4 legs.

2: Donkeys have two ears.

3: Donkeys have one tail.

How do donkeys help:

The donkeys help by picking the grass so they do not need to mow the grass. The donkeys help with carrying  the stuff. The donkeys can help by running to help if someone is hurt.
