Matua Sam took a deep breath and stepped forward slowly, like a warrior walking into battle. The classroom still buzzed like a hive full of angry bees, but this time he did not raise his voice. Instead, he stood silently at the front of the room with his arms folded like a statue guarding a castle. One by one, the students began to notice him. The noisy chatter faded away as quickly as rain disappearing after a storm.
Finally, the room became as quiet as a library at midnight.
Matua Sam smiled calmly and looked around the class. “Thank you,” he said in a steady voice that was smooth like warm honey. “Now we can finally learn together.”
The students shifted in their seats, looking slightly embarrassed. Even the student with the sandwich quickly hid the last bite inside his bag like a squirrel hiding food for winter.
Matua Sam began the lesson with confidence shining through him like sunlight breaking through dark clouds. He told a funny story about when he was at school, accidentally calling his teacher “Mum” in front of the whole class. The students burst into laughter, their laughter bouncing around the room like popcorn popping in a pan. Suddenly, the classroom no longer felt cold and chaotic. It felt warm and welcoming like a family sitting around a dinner table.
As the lesson continued, the students listened carefully. Pens scratched across paper like tiny insects marching across the desks. Hands shot into the air like fireworks exploding into the night sky. Even the students who were usually distracted joined in and shared their ideas proudly.
Outside, the heavy rain finally stopped. Sunlight streamed through the windows like golden ribbons, lighting up the classroom. Matua Sam looked around proudly. The class that once felt like a wild storm now worked together as smoothly as a waka gliding across calm water.
At the end of the lesson, one student stayed behind.
“Sorry for being noisy before, Matua Sam,” he said quietly. “Today was actually fun.”
Those words warmed Matua Sam’s heart like a blazing fire on a freezing night. He realised that being a great teacher was not about shouting the loudest. It was about patience, confidence, and finding ways to guide others through the storm.
As the students left the room laughing and smiling, Matua Sam looked out the window at the clear sky. He felt proud because, just like the weather outside, the storm inside the classroom had finally passed.
